'OIL' light...!

Hello there... So after purchasing my 1974 P6B a couple of weeks ago it went to my mechanic who gave it the once over and a double thumbs up after a thorough inspection and good service. However, the 'OIL' light is still on (the oil pressure seems to be ok sitting at 30psi on idle and perhaps raising to about 40psi on light load) which worries me a little and I just want to know if there is anything I can instruct my mechanic to look at when I take the car back to him next week... I'm taking the car to Goodwood on Sunday to give it a good long run to see if anything else occurs but I just want to nip this in the bud and start enjoying my car without having to sweat every time I drive it...! Thanks in advance for any help/advice...

If you have a reading on the guage but the light is staying on, then as a first step I'd try pulling the wire off the warning light sender unit, if the light doesn't go out then it's a fault with the wire to the sender earthing out somewhere, if it does then I'd fit a new oil warning light sender unit.

I had a similar problem some years ago, oil light came on but in my case it stayed on whilst at the same time oil pressure registered above that required to see light activation. I removed and replaced the warning light sender, which is located on the oil pump front cover. It is the smaller of the two senders. Problem was then solved.

Once oil pressure has dropped to 8psi or so, the oil warning light will light and remain so till pressure rises above that minimum.

Ron.
