Oil light coming on occassionally

Hi All,

I have a Rover 2200SC which I'm using as my daily driver after a full respray and a damn good rustproofing everywhere! It runs and drives really well with a strong engine. However, after around 20 miles the oil light comes on, goes off, comes on again. It only does it for a few seconds at a time. The engine has plenty oil in, its not losing any and there are no nasty noises coming from the engine & as I say it runs fine. Could it be a dodgy oil pressure switch or could it be something more serious? Any ideas?

Cheers

It's when you are slowing down to a stop I think but will have to double check, don't recall it happening at speed.

Best bet is to connect an oil pressure gauge, but the fact that it only occurs when hot and at lower speeds suggests low oil pressure, although if the pressure is low, the timing chains will rattle when idling. I did have a problem with my car, though, when the wire from the light was trapped when replacing the dash, causing an intermittent short to earth. As the light uses an earth to operate it, it flashed occasionally.

Timing chains don't rattle. I have been behind the dash binnacle though to sort out the dicky temperature gauge, which now works fine. Maybe I've disturbed a wire to the oil light....

Order & fit a new oil pressure switch. Cheap & easy & will more than likely cure the problem. If not then it will eliminate it from the equation.

+1.

Check the wiring for an intermittant short to earth first, but it may well have the wrong switch fitted. Most switches put the light on at 7psi or so, the one for the Rover should put the light on at around 20psi.
