Oil light - bulb or switch?

Hallo all,
After replacing the angle drive on the back of my speedo and changing a bulb which disintegrated during this, my oil light won`t go out. The level is fine, compression test gives no worries, but it stays on all the time. At first it would go out, then flicker for a while, then stay lit. Now it just stays lit. Could I have put the bulb in the `wrong way`? I remember having a similar problem when I changed brake light bulbs on my Imp. With the bulb in one way the brake lights stayed on all the time, take the bulb out and rotate it 90 degrees and it worked fine. I can`t get the bulb out now as the replacement one is a bit smaller than the one I removed and can`t get a grip of the wee bugger! :p Or could it be a coincidence and my pressure/ temp switch has gone??

Hi Drew

A little more information please - I can't remember what model you have. If round dials then step one is to watch the oil pressure gauge and see if the oil light is telling porkies or not. If a V8 then, yes the oil pressure is likely to be very low at idling and you could just have crossed the threshold of where it starts to stay on at idle. If the opportunity exists try setting your idle speed marginally higher.

I take it is the oil light bulb you replaced? If so is it the same rating as the old one (should have been)? If not it may well have upset the comparitive resistances in the circuit.

Seems to me the first step is to take a deep breath and really go for it getting this new bulb out. If necessary smash it and use a pair of long nose pliars to extract the remains. Then fit the correct bulb and I'd put money on the problem being solved.

A simple initial test would be to pull off the connector at the oil pressure switch, turn on the ignition key and see if the oil light stays on. If it does, your problem is somewhere up in your display.

It`s a series 1 2000 with the strip speedo. I`ve been thinking of breaking the bulb and doing a bit of dentistry on the remains, I`ll get on it Thursday when I`m off work. Just been grass cutting for the 5th time in about a month and it`s killed me back! Anyone know of a lawn retarder, and I don`t mean concrete!? :D

Hi Drew.
Am off all this week if you want to pop over!
Going to another show at Malvern on sunday if youre up for it???
As you know I have car parts & car trailer in my back garden so Ive got gravel! It saves trying to mow round everything or loosing them in a jungle :D
The front lawn is handilly placed so that when the council mower men come round, a couple of quid gets it done! :p and 2 pack of lager at Xmas!!
Taking the V8 for its MOT weds morn, have given it the once over and dont forsee any hiccups, but am using a new MOT man, its £20 cheaper than my last place,so expect I will have to give him a quick lesson in classic cars, especially P6's :;):
