Number plate light

The exterior of my number plate light is in good condition, but the bulb holder inside is pretty rotten. Has anyone any tips for obtaining a new bulb holder other than just buying a complete lamp.

I know to my cost that P6 type number plate lights are pretty rare and go for noticeable money on e bay if they are in A1 knick.

If you get stuck why not adopt the German market style of twin lamps - these are still readily available new!

I suspect Robert wants to fit a new bulb holder inside the old casing. Have a look for a sidelight bulb holder or similar. You could always solder wires to either end of a festoon type bulb and make a suitable bracket.
 
I made one up out of a scrap piece of galvanised metal I had in the garage. and a couple of little bolts. You can't tell the dif from the outside.

I think I saw the export models with the little chrome lamps, looks smart but different.

Thanks for replies.
I will probably go down same route as arthuy, as I said the chrome and glass are fine so I only need to replace the bulb holder part of the lamp. Another job for a wet day.

Go to a steam rally or like and buy a cheap trailer light unit and strip out the guts, they usually only cost a couple of quid.

When I was trying to find a way to fix the wee bracket I tried the plastic type lamps. you could have cut down and used araldite to fix them to a plate of sorts.

I also tried using fibre glass body fillers. What to do is smear the chrome in grease or vaseline. Then get a poly bag and line the inside of the chrome cover with it. Mix enough fibre glass to fill the cover. Leave it to harden. you will have a block that you will be able to cut down and shape. Then go to Maplin and buy some BA9s bulb holders and fix them to the block. simple

The little Germany type looking ones are available from the MGB HIVE. they have a website.

The paxalin insulator in my number plate light had broken, so I carefully drilled (hand brace) the 4 pop rivits out, had the steel holder/bracket dipped and zinc plated then found a piece of PCB inside an old defunct rev counter, I cut this to size, drilled it (with the hand brace of course) and then pop rivitted back the bulb contact and PCB insulator to the newly zinc coated holder/bracket. It is as good as new now! :D
