Non std speedo in P6 Police Cars - Proof for not using std speedo

Hello all

Does anybody has any info. on why the police used an additional speedo in their P6s (1970s). I have a dispute regarding the speed reading in my 3500 auto, and would welcome proof that the Police also didn't trust the standard speedo for verifying speeds!
Thanks

Hi Eggbert,

I think dash mounted speedo were calibrated items used to prove you have committed the crime of speeding and are verified prior to the police taking it out on patrol. only traffic cars would have these as there is no requirement for the non traffic to have this.

I think that If you have been done speeding then I would pay the fine and saving yourself the hassle of contesting it, they will be able to prove you were speeding and in their eyes you are driving an old car that has a dodgy speedo or heavy right foot.

I am sure that the ex-police/police members of the forum will tell you the same.

Thanks for the reply Colin - I thought along the same lines as you. Regretfully its will be costly (rolling road) to demonstrate likely innocence - speedo is +10mph based on revs and calibration against 'newer' cars.

I was once told by a fellow 3500 owner that the Police P6 Traffic Cars were all fitted with calibrated speedometers, after an incident where a gentleman was able to prove to the presiding judge or magistrate that he had believed he had been driving within the legal limit and couldn't be found guilty of speeding because his speedometer was innaccurate. Allegedly the furious Judge through the matter straight out of court and decreed that henceforth all Police Patrol Vehicles must be fitted with accurate speedos. Don't know if its true but it made me chuckle. I've also heard mention of extra devices tailor-made to give accurate speedometer readings, but I'm afraid I can't remember who provides this service, I only remember having been told that it isn't cheap.

An inaccurate speedo won't cut any mustard as a defence - you were either speeding or you weren't, regardless of what the car was telling you. However, a kindly Magistrate might listen to this in mitigation and set any fine accordingly...but don't wager on it if it ever happens to you.

These days even non RPU (traffic) wagons are often found with calibrated speedos, obviating the need for specialist speed measuring kit.

Another good tip is to borrow (or buy) either a navigation system or speed trap detector (not that I believe in them). I genuinely believe that observing the speed limit SENSIBLY is the trick and allows for officers discretion. (I do admit you do get the Hitler types as well).

Both units are obviously operated by GPS (satellite) and give a 100% accurate speed reading. No need for a rolling road nowadays.

Being a Bobby and an ex-motorcycle officer I can safely say that it isn’t an actual requirement to have a calibrated Speedo to convict speeders. You may have noticed the odd couple of white squares painted onto the road surface, mainly on bypasses and the likes. This is a measured half mile. Should an officer carry out a following check in a vehicle without calibration, the Speedo can be checked for it's accuracy with a calibrated stopwatch. This isn't widely used but can be, so it’s not always the traffic cars and bikes you need to worry about.

WHAT ABOUT ME IN MY TRANSIT - WITH A STOP WATCH!!!!!!!!! ARGHHHH!!

Fortunately, I'm too busy fighting with 18 stone drunks or 6 stone smack heads!!!!!

Johnny. :p
