I recently had my 2000 tc tuned up by a local garage that is used to working on mg,s.The problem i have now is that it will not fire up.After it had been tuned the car ran fine at first but then it started to stall at idle especially when sat in traffic where i had to use the choke to keep it going.
I laid the car up for a month whilst busy at work but it now refuses to fire up.I have taken the plugs out and it turns over very well, but with the plugs in it struggles to turn as though the battery is flat.there is a strong spark at each plug and have tried a new battery but still wont start.
I have checked the forum and a similar problem was diagnosed as timing out.
I remember the mechanic mentioning that he adjusted the timing because it was out .
My question is if the mechanic has set the timing out why did the car run prior to lay up and why did it run ok before he adjusted it and why wont it start now. There is petrol getting through i have removed the plugs to check. If it is the timing how can i get it running so i can get it to the garage to sort it.

what has maybe happended is the distributer has slipped round slightly which may have caused the car to stall and as it has slipped a bit further it now wont start..u need to turn the distributer a little one way or the other to get the car to start if thats the problem......or the fuel filter is blocked and was starving the engine of fuel..try priming the carbs first of all with the priming lever on the side of the fuel pump which is on the drivers side(right side)to check that it is pumping fuel.then check the distributer

Yep I would agree, try putting your hand on the top of the distributor and see if it moves, probably didn't tighten the clamp bolt.

Could also be they didn't tighten the points and they have closed up

turns out its two things.starter motor is drawing too much current [not turning engine over fast enough, and dizzy is loose and has slipped round.
now i need another starter motor.
And have just heard of a complete series one like mine in need of removal.
Anyone know what a car transporter would charge to pick up in manchester and drop off in bradford west yorks.
cheers steve

CHEERS STEVE

update took the starter for check up nothing wrong with it so its going back on.the lad at the auto place which deals in car electrics has offered to call up this weekend and check the car out .

theres a pre-engaged starter on ebay, item4619416731,... does your car have the battery in the boot?, i had a similar problem with my s2 3500,turned out to be the battery earth tag thats spot welded to the boot floor,it had a hairline crack along the fold line,..found it by chance when i was looking in the boot late one night whilst conecting up jump leads, saw it glowing when the missus was trying to start it.

final update .refitted starter motor and checked all connections [again] tried starting turned over very well refused to fire up.checked fuel pump and lines to see if petrol was getting through everything ok.poured a bit of fresh petrol into both carbs it fired up but would not run?so stuck some fresh petrol in the tank some more down the carbs it eventually ran took it for a spin and all seems fine guy coming to tune the carbs up right this time[someone i used to use a long time ago but lost contact].
one question though does petrol go off so quickly or could water have got i somehow or has some git put something in the tank while its been stood.
anywhy at least iam back on the road now and a little more wiser.hurray

phew & well done!

I picked up a couple of cars last year that were scrap - had beensittng for a good few years - they both fired up and ran on the petrol in them. Ive heard of cars ( not specifcally P6's) needing towed for miles sometimes to get them to fire up - in ye olden days !

Anyway well done again!
