noise on tick over on 3500

Hello everyone

my car has recently started making a noise on tick over and also when driving around.
It is like a squeeky tapping noise. It dosent start straight away tho, it comes on after the engine has been running for a couple of minutes and slowly gets louder.
It reminds of a faulty fan belt noise but not as squeely

Anyone have any thoughts on this? oil level is fine although the oil will be getting replaced soon

regards
James

You mention the fanbelt, although you're not sure, so wait until it's making the noise and then remove the belt and see if the noise disappears. That way you can eliminate it before moving on to other things.

Water pump can exhibit squeakiness and I imagine that you could also get tapping with worn bearings too.

Thanks guys
im not too sure how to remove a belt from a running engine HarveyP6
Will be getting some fresh oil in the engine soon

thanks again
James

I think Harvey means stop the engine, remove belt, start engine, listen.
Although I know a Beetle fan belt can be replaced without turning the engine off, although Harvey (who is a Rover Ninja) would probably be able to do it.
It could also be alternator bearings, try holding a long screw driver against the alternator and put your ear to it and see if the sound is from there. (unless you have a stethoscope for the job).

John.

Thanks everyone
i went round it with some Wd40 :)
cheers John i will have a go with the alternator next time i run it, it has had a new one fitted in the past.
i think the noise is around the top somewhere deffinatley not underneath.

If it was tappets/pistons etc the noise would be there from the moment i start the engine im guessing? I dont hear this noise till it has been running a couple of minutes. Engine runs smooth with steady revs etc.

Hopefully it is just something in need of a freeing up

thanks

Yeah, right, closely followed by a long stay in A&E.... I don't think I'll be trying that any time soon.

Also maybe not a good idea telling someone the screw driver , stethoscope trick without enlightening further , You start putting it into the moving alternator fan , and then putting it to the side of your head , Well , casualty , join the cue !
Would make good you tube footage though :D

Squeaky belts can also be checked with green dish soap dribbled onto a pulley.
The most convenient one will do as it will coat all the others.
Water pump and alternator are also suspects as stated earlier, but don't get suckered
into the belt squealing because it could be as a result of a siezing bearing in the pump or
alternator.
As a rule, the alternator will normally cause squeal under high loads like after starting
when there is a lot of charging going on, the water pump will do it under revs as it's
working harder and the aircon will obviously do it when it's on.
As a rule..... :?

I reckon your noise is the alternator--the bearings suffer heat and side loading--not good for bearings especially rear bearing :( however upside is its a lot easier to sort than on an Omega v6-that can take 2 hours to remove it

Thanks a lot for your feedback guys, I hope to sort it out soon will be putting some petrol in her at the weekend so will have a look then. Hopefully it will just be something like the alternator bearings, mine doesnt have the blade guard on the alternator so the screw driver test would take concentration :)

thanks everyone

Thanks John

My dad decided to give a car quick drive up and down today, something tends to be draining the battery when the car is sat( i undo the battery after use)
Today my dad charged the battery up before starting the car and he said he couldn't hear the ticking noise so i'm hoping it is just a charging sound :)
there are a few odd wires around that i dont know their use for which could be the battery problem. Will check this again with a fully charged battery to double check if it is causing the sound.
Thanks for your help again everyone im sure your tips and advice will help me in the future

regards
James
