The reverse gear on my 1970 series 1 V8 has been playing up
in reverse for the last couple of months and has now decided to spit its dummy out.It will engage forward gears no problem but won't entertain going backwards.Has anyone got any ideas they could throw may way.
John.

John,
factory workshop manual, in road testing type 35 g'box, says that if reverse will not select at rest then 1 -2 shift valve sticking - First check with any auto gearbox fault is FLUID LEVEL - sounds obvious but I have been caught by this in the past.
The factory workshop manual goes through all the testing procedures if you have the time and patience, or you could just take it to an auto gearbox specialist for assessment - See yellow pages.
Good luck.
Regards, John.

Thanks for the info John,i have just got my hands on the official idiot book and that may be my problem.
i'll have a look this weekend.Thanks again.

John,
it's never as bad as you think! I wish you luck. I remember driving to 2½miles work one morning in my first 3500 and thinking that the clutch was slipping ( it was an auto) and on the return journey only just making it into my garage (triple plus workshop) where I had to change the gearbox and torque convertor!
Still prefer an auto tho'!
Regards, John.

Hi John,
Just to update you on my gearbox problem, the gent who i bought the car of has offered to exchange my series 1 v8 which is slightly dog-eared for his mint 1973 series 2 v8 in lunar grey which he has spent ££££ on new bearings, suspension and engine rebuild. It is a one owner car from new,63500 miles and looks stunning in every way.
Just wondering if its the right thing to do??
Regard John

John, the series 1 v8 cars are very rare now but the series 2 had improved instrumentation and appearance! Depends which model you prefer and if you want to do work on your car or just have the pleasure of using it.
It's a personal thing really, but put them side by side and I'd be tempted to go for the best condition one, and if that's the series 2 you can always fit the aluminium grills to improve quality appearance!
Regards, John.

:) Hi John,
Just to let you know ive decided to swap my series 1 for the series 2 and i think ive done the right thing?????.Took it for a drive this morning and it is a better smoother driver than my other 1,just got to change the standard balloon tyres for my low profiles on the minilites over for a sharper handler!

Hi John.Ive got all the paperwork for my new ride, and some of the old mot's say that the colour was lunar grey.then mexico brown, then back to lunar grey.Is there any way of finding out what the true history is.The mileage seems genuine looking at the old mot's,60.152 and looking under her she has had no welding whatsover.Any advice much appreciated.
John ???

John,
you can get a print from microfilm of the old log books from DVLA and, of course a certificate (certified copy of a factory record) from BMIHT (British Motor Industry Heritage Trust) see their website(s).
These may help.
Regards, John.
