No Ignition, Full Beam or Brake warning light on Dash.

It's been a while in the restoring, however, my 1971 3500 is nearly ready to be put through a roadworthy. One of the nagging issues I've struggled to finish off is the lack of any action on some of the dash warning lights. I've played around with certain parts of the wiring within the car, with no avail.

I'm currently lacking a IGN light when the key is turned to position two in the barrel, I've replaced the relay between the dash and the alternator and no such luck. The amp meter in the dash cluster shows the alternator to be working.

I'm also lacking a BRAKE warning light, with the handbrake on. I've moved the transmission cover and played around with the switch to no avail. The light will, however, come on once the brake reservoir top is removed from the brake fluid.

I've noticed, also that the blue BEAM light that comes on when the high beams on the car are on, does not illuminate in the dash. This did, however, work at one point, however, I can't remember when exactly it stopped functioning.

I've replaced the printed board that all instruments sit in, while also playing around with spare bulbs that are know to be good, without seeing any change in operation. Is there a singular pick up somewhere that these all run off? Is it something in the infamous Series 2 fuse box?

These are the last niggles stopping the car from hitting the open road and would be keen to get them addressed.

Any advice would be appreciated. If rectified I'll put up a project thread on the very early series 2 Australian Made 3500 v8 in blue I've recently aquired, as a thanks. Been garage for 25 years and a bit of a time warp.

Thanks

Fraser

Good question. Alas at work just at work now and away from the car.

Is there something you're looking for in particular? As I may be able to help, seeing as I've nearly had the entire car to bits.

Otherwise I'll be home in a few hours.

If it's a Series 2 with pad wear warning sensors, then if any of the pad warning system is faulty or disconnected then the handbrake warning light won't come on with the handbrake on, as the switch on the handbrake is the check for the warning light system.

!971 should be an 11AC alternator, and if the 3AW warning light control fails, the ignition light won't work, but the alternator will still charge.

That one you can really only trace through, checking for a supply at the bulb, then through the PCB, and the multiplug on the back of the binnacle. After that it's check the wiring diagram and see where it comes from.

Thanks Harvey.

The pads currently fitted are pretty reasonable quality. I'm reluctant to pull them out and replace them for the sake of the sensors. Can I bypass them by joining the two male bullet plugs on the car's connections together? The circuit is currently missing the Front Right Hand (FRH) sensor wire and the Left Hand Rear (LHR) sensor wire. If I was to short/connect the two male plugs on the car together at the FRH and "wire in series" as oppose to the original set-up of parallel (or again short) the LHR to the RHR sensor, I should have a complete circuit? Albeit without the sensor reading the wear at the FRH and and the LHR taking the wear off the RHR sensor, which I'm content with. Need to see what roadworthy man thinks.

I removed a relay from the engine bay of my other car to check that the relay wasn't dead. The ignition light worked fine on that car, however, there was still no light on the ignition of the car in question. Perhaps something is preventing a circuit completing to the bulb? In theory, I could rewire it from the relay to the multi-pin socket at the back of the dash (5A) and (4A) and get a circuit, providing that there isn't something else at fault.

Full Beams, I suspect are just dry, brittle contacts in the steering column. Hopefully, dismantling and copious amounts of WD40 should sort that.

Thoughts and views are welcome and appreciated...

Will show all the blue V8 3500 this evening... Picked up for $900

Actually, come to think about it, I've replaced the relay for the starter. Not the ignition light. Where is the relay for the ignition light switch?

Good job eh?

You can.

The system is already wired in series. That's why any single missing pad connector stops the handbrake warning light working.

Thanks again Harvey...

One living thing and I'll leave you alone... I promise.

Where is the relay between the ignition warning light and the alternator situated? Is it behind the dash, as I've put that all back together?

Fraser,
Ignition warning light relay is on the A pillar, behind the knee bin.
3 wires, Brown, Brown/ Yellow and Black.

Hope this helps.

Jim.

Thats excellent thanks, Most lights working now. Need to play around with the brakes sensors, however, I won't have time to do that until Sunday.

Thanks again
