No Headlights :(

Hi all,
I have a Rover p6 Series two I was driving along in the dark when the headlights decided to go on and off over the bumps in the road I had to drive home on full beam.:(

Now I have no driving lights at all,
But If I put the full beam on the outer lights come on but very dim and the same if I flash the lights,
I have checked the fuse box and cleaned the wire connectors but sill nothing any advice would be most welcome
Thanks

Thank Harvey,
The only ones I could see was a bolt on the left and right inner wings I have removed and cleaned both earth wires but still the same problem is there another earth wire apart from the battery one do you know
Thanks ;)

Hi, I think the next step will be the switch on the column, the dip/main function gets it's power from the light switch and the flash function is ignition fed. Disconnect the plug and using a link wire on the various connections will reveal whether it's the switch or not.

Hi Colin,
Thanks for your reply just so I got this right disconnect the plug that's from the stalk on the column, and run a wire from the column to the headlight switch on the dash.

Hi Bob
Another thing to check apart from the sealed beams themselves are the bullet connectors on wiring looms on the lamp assemblys.
The black female connectors which join lamps to car harness can corrode/break internally and the bullets also corrode, but these normally clean up ok, but you may need new black bullet holders.
Had to sort out my mates 2000 last week with this fault.
Good luck
Clive.

Hi Clive,

Thank you for your advice,
I am sorry I did neglect to mention that I had already cleaned the connections.
this was after I had to cleaned every wire as the previous owner got carried away with the under seal brush or something that is black that had never dried.
One of the bullet holders did disintegrate, but I got a replacement from a landrover parts shop nearby.
Then I added some Dielectric Grease to each bullet to keep the damp out and reconnected the wires.

On another point I have just taken off the fuse box from the bulk head as I noticed a wire from the radio entered it
from behind the box.

I am glad I did someone had just twisted the wire onto one of the terminals.

It also looks like somebody has cut/repaired that brown/purple wire at some point.
Check that fuse box/wiring very carefully for any burning of damage as these can be notorious
cause of electrical faults.
Clive.

For some reason they have put a extra long loop wire in and it has a join in it as well
Not sure what its for o_O

Hi, Ban306, Disconnect the plug on the switch fly lead from the loom socket and using a length of wire link the different terminals in the loom socket to duplicate the switch operations, if the lights work correctly then the fault is in the switch. If not then the fault lies elsewhere, then check there is a supply from the light switch.

One thing to try is with the lights on. Rotate the fuse by running your thumb over it.

Sounds like a wind up but regularly works.

Fixed we have lights a big thank you for all your advice it was the fuse the terminals needed more cleaning I will have to get around to changing for the spade fuse box soon as I can

Thanks again all
