I'm quite pleased with the haul Chris! Unfortunately a couple of issues have arisen on the trip.
I have always had an issue that when the car properly warmed up, there was a lot of heat around the front footwells. I thought this might be coming from the trans tunnel but now I think the heater may be permanently blowing hot air at my feet. I suspect that means the vacuum operated water valve is buggered. Also the fan stopped working shortly nefore home.
Next alarming problem; When stuck in traffic, the car started to get warm. Not into the red or anything but certainly into the upper part of the green. Much higher than normal and the oil light came on at idle! Just flickering at first and then staying on. It would go out as soon as I touched the gas and got the revs up to 1000 or so, but the oil pressure gauge was still reading about 28psi. It did this for the whole trip, everytime the traffic got heavy and the temp rose but I suspect that the oil light sender is at fault here because the gauge seems very consistent. I'll change that and see what happens.
Next up was a small clunk coming from under the left rear when I went over judderbars at anything above walking pace. I suspect shock bushes but I'll have a closer look tomorrow.
She did seem quite down on power too. I had set the carbs up just before I left and the timing was knocked back a touch to cope with the 95 octane fuel but she did struggle to pull the trailer and still pinked on steep hills with the extra load. After the trailer was removed she still didn't feel very perky. Accelerating hard out of a corner on a damp road still couldn't produce more than the slightest hint of wheelspin.
My biggest concern is that she does seem to get quite hot in traffic. Not overheating but just a really high underbonnet temp. I suspect the reason for this is that the car has a standard waterpump and 5 blade fan fitted. It should have had a viscous fan fitted originally and I think this is necessary to pull the air through the condenser and around the overcrowded engine bay. Is there any source out there for the right water pump and fan? Even one that can be rebuilt?
At this point I'm considering going for the single scoop look. (Which may happen anyway to tie in with another exciting project. More on that shortly. )
