New/ replacement 3500 auto box

Well i've seen articles on replacing a stock 3500s gearbox with a '77 or converting an auto 3500 to manual but cannot find much on what could be put in an automatic 3500 P6 in the way of a more modern & fuel efficient auto box. Can you drop a sd1 auto in an automatic 3500 P6? Whats been done by others what works best, any ideas please.
 
Hi there, whereabout in the World are you? Reason being, a BW35 within the U.K is quite a different beast to the ones we have here in Australia.
SD1 auto is, as far as I recall, either a BW65 or a GM180. Not a straight swap as Harvey will tell you. Harvey is renown for his knowledge of transmissions within Rovers, so I will leave you in his very capable hands.

Hi Ron, thanks for your reply, looking forward to hear what Harvey might be able to advise. I see you sign off as 4.6, id be interested to haer what mods you did to achieve an extra 1100cc, is it a modern 4.6hse, any issues fitting etc?

I can't really add anything to the advice of fitting a ZF4HP22/24.

It does have its problems, but if you are aware of those then it's a good box to use.
