Hi all,
I should have joined long ago as I have enjoyed reading topics on the forum for some time now.
The story so far........In 1976 my late grandfather bought GAN 340J a 1971 Zircon blue 3500 automatic with sandalwood leather interior - and no power steering !! At the time it was 5 years old with around 25K on the clock and was a local Maidenhead car having been chauffeur driven from new. I had many childhood memories of days out etc in that car. He kept the Rover until the late 1980's when it had around 60K on the clock and sold to buy a BMW - which was not really him !
Fast forward to around 5 years ago and while trawling eBay I saw GAN 340J....looking rather sad with flat paint and tyres - (but with only 74K on the clock) I called the owner and explained I had to have it And agreed to view ( amazingly the car was only in Wycombe around 5 miles from Maidenhead - so hadn't travelled far from home ) I met Simon who was a banger racer...with a heart ! He had bought the car locally from an elderly man who had started to suffer Alzheimer's and crashed the Rover (very likely the guy who bought from my grandfather) On seeing the car Simon decided to repair and run her...rather than race for several years. My aunt who lives close to Wycombe had reported seeing the Rover on occasion 'traveling at speed' !! A brake failure on route to an Mot station led to the car being left on a friends drive for around 5 years - hence the sorry appearance. A deal was struck and GAN was transported to my nice dry garage where it has been ever since. I have become a fast learner on base unit rust.....as an apparently scruffy but sound car has rear arch horrors and sills to suit. I have started some welding but become side tracked over time - rust is so disheartening as you all know......watch this space.

Welcome!! a great story. however we want photos photos and photos

It sounds like you have been lucky to find a childhood memory that hasn't meet the fate of the crusher, once fully restored I know that you will have many years of pleasure from your car.

Graeme
