Hello everyone!,
I recently purchased a 1957 Ford Popular which had a 1982 Rover SD1 3500 3.5L engine and a LT77 manual. As I'm working on the car for my fiance's sister who requires an automatic gearbox, I'm going to be installing a 1979 BW65 also from a Rover SD1 and I'm looking for advice on what kind of oil cooler was used on that transmission. I read that there are some experts on these transmissions used in the SD1s on this forum and I'm hoping you can help me out. For example, what is the size of the oil cooler line and where might I be able to buy it, and what size oil cooler do I need to sufficiently cool this transmission. Thank you so much in advance for your replies as I've never actually used a forum before and am at a standstill on this build until I resolve this! Upon request just for fun, I can email anyone interested pictures of the car and or parts. Thank you!

Sincerely,
Royce

P.S. Please excuse the fact that the car itself is not a Rover as the parts I'm asking about ARE. I'm hoping this won't be a problem as this is of course a Rover forum. Thank you again for any advice you have!

Doesn't bother me what car it's in..........

Both P6B's and Sd1's use a cooler which is inside the radiator, and I would avoid these because of the risk of cross contamination.

If I was doing what you propose I would get a set of cooler pipes from an SD1 V8 (or P6B) with a 65 box and couple those to a Triumph Stag transmission cooler. You can couple extra flexi pipes together if you need more distance at the front to reach the seperate cooler, or just use longer oil resistant hose using the same fittings.

Job's a good 'un!

Actually any oil cooler will do including engine oil coolers. Get a nice big one and then include an inline thermostat (Demon Tweeks etc) in the pipework to make sure you don't overcool the transmission. Pipework is not terribly special, anything suitable for piping up an engine oil cooler will do.

Thank you so much for your replies! Not to be information greedy here, but do either of you or anyone else know what size (MM?) those fittings are so I know what to look forward to, and also what temp the oil should be if I do install a gauge. If I understand correctly, your suggesting that I just buy the largest oil cooler that will fit in front of the radiator on the Pop (a very small space), and pipe it to a gauge inside the car to make sure it's all right? If you could shed a little more light on this I would be really greatful. Again I think the fitting size, and oil temperature I should be looking for would be fantastic if someone could possibly pull that out of their pool of knowledge. Thank you again so much and let me know if you would like photos!

Cheers,
Royce

As I said before, if you buy a secondhand set of cooler pipes from a V8/BW65, then you'll get all the correct bracketry to hold them and it will look like original rather than a conversion. Once you have those you'll have fittings to try on any cooler that meets your needs. If you want to add a thermostat you can fit it in the flexible lines. A temp guage is a bit over the top, but that's a matter of choice. The reason I suggested the Stag cooler, is that all the fittings are compatable.

Hello again! I just wanted to thank you both very much again. I really appreciate the advice. You guys are the angels of the Rover world!

Cheers,
Royce
