New cars in Colorado

Hello everyone, I've been reading this forum for some time now, and I've learned all kinds of interesting things. I want to thank you all for your knowledge and project threads, since I don't think I'd be very confident working on these cars with only a book to reference!

As for my cars, I have two P6's, the last two from my father's Rover days. He worked on a lot of Rovers in California in the late 70's and 80's, and owned several over the years. My parents brought their most reliable driver and one project car with them when they moved, but the move was basically the end of the Rovering. The driving car ruined its engine a year or two later, and more important things needed the money. The driver got a garage slot; the other car wasn't so lucky. Then they sat for twenty years.

That's the backstory; now I'll actually talk about the cars! The driver is a 1968 200TC, originally April Yellow with (I think) a black interior: it is currently white with tan/black/red interior. It suffered terminal overheating and was never repaired, thankfully I have a complete spare engine out of a '65 SC and another TC head to mostly make it stock again. The engine combined with a failed emissions test were what took it off the road, so I feel relatively confident I can make it drive again. I don't have much mechanical experience, so it should be interesting!

The other car is a (late) 1969 NADA 3500S, Corsica Blue/black vinyl, no front seats, rusty floors, not much good paint left. It was bought non-running, last registered in '79, and is known to have sat through at least one flood in California. I'd love to make it run again and restore it, but I know it needs a complete strip-down and a lot of work, and I don't know how rusty the important parts are. I'm not going to consider it until the 2000 is running well and polished up a little.

I feel like I've talked too much, and the forum ate the first try at this post, so I'll stop here. I'll post pictures if I can tomorrow.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Sounds as if you have some interesting work ahead of you, I'm looking forward to seeing the photos. One thing we can guarantee is plenty of encouragement!

Hi and welcome - sounds like two interesting cars with lots of history :)

You provide the pictures and the questions and we'll try and provide the encouragement you need!

Thanks for the comments, I'm back and I have some pictures to share. I'm going to split the cars into separate posts just in case I lose a post again.

The 2000TC is first. Between the tight garage and poor lighting, it's hard to get good pictures of it.

The paint's pretty good on the outside, since it was almost new when garaged. My dad took the reflectors and all the badges off when the paint was done.

Rear%20seats.jpg

These show the mixed interior. Black gloveboxes, pillar trim, and Furflex trim; tan door cards and carpet; red seats and rear tray. The seats aren't quite so red in person, that's just my camera being difficult. You can also see the problem with the paint: if it wasn't visible from the outside, it didn't get painted!

I just hit the attachment limit, so I guess I need three posts. I'll show the 3500 next, and put the leftovers in the last post. The next group will be up as soon as I put them together. Let me know if I get carried away with the pictures.

Edit: I apparently can't post more pictures. I'll try again later.

Hi Welcome to the forum, your 2000 looks really nice, are the seats mango they look like they could be..... you should be able to get 5 pics on each post... and it is most annoying when your post disappears its happened to me too :? but usually when I'm posting from my mobile(cellular)...looking forward to the 3500 pics :D

Hi V8guy, I've seen your car around the forums, it's quite pretty and the scoop matches the hood very well.

I don't think the seats are mango. My camera's got some defect in its color detection that tints everything pink. They're not orange in person and not nearly so bright, so i think they're probably just Toledo Red. They're not original to the car, I think they came out of a grey TC that was broken before my dad got this one.

I could have posted five pictures, but the last two were blurry engine shots, and I had seven more pictures of the 3500. I thought I would just dump them in the third post and have the better pictures higher up! Sadly, I still can't post more, so I'll probably wait until tomorrow and try then.

Hello and welcome to the forum!
I look forward to reading your progress with the two cars! Your 2000 is the colour that mine was originally, but mine was changed to yellow some years ago. The red seats look smart, and the car will look fantastic once you've got it out and about! :D

How long does the attachment restriction usually last? And is it forum-wide or based on the user's actions? I'd like to finish with the pictures, but I can go look for another image site if that would be better.

EDIT: Nevermind, I just saw the thread in The Lounge, I'll use another way.

Here's the rest of the pictures:

Two blurry views of the 2000's engine (click for the original size). Nothing special in the first one, just an overall view. The second shows what I found under the head: about an inch of solid rust on the first and fourth cylinder walls. The debris on the pistons is mostly yellow and crystalline; evaporated antifreeze?

Finally, the 3500:

The poor car hasn't left that spot in decades. The furthest it goes is forward and back two feet, to keep it from sinking into the ground. The license plate frame says "San Francisco Europacars." The dealer that sold it maybe?

Enginebay.jpg

The engine is complete, minus the coil and something that lives behind the little black blob in the center of the image. Would that be one of the automatic chokes? There's usually a bag over the intake to keep water out.

Frontseats.jpg

Rearseats.jpg

We've never had the front seats. The leather ones in there came from the same SC that donated a bunch of other spare parts. They didn't like the sun apparently. I have no idea how, but the rear seats are pretty much undamaged. Would it be the tinted glass that protected them, or is black vinyl just really sturdy?

Rustyfloors.jpg

Another bad picture, but it shows the damage to the floors. I think it's probably flood damage from soaked carpets, because what I can see underneath looks okay.

Those are all my pictures. If there's anything anyone would like to see or know, just ask. If not, I'll probably make a project thread when I have something worth putting in it. Thanks for your comments!

Glad you managed to get the pics on :) looks like you've got a lot of fun and rewarding time ahead of you, don't forget to squeeze in a few updates along the way, looking forward to it already :D

By UK standards, the 3500 only looks a week away from a fully usable car! I'm pretty sure the part you refer to as missing will be part of the AED (Automatic Enrichment Device). They are available new from the UK so there shouldn't be an issue filling the gap! Ask again when you are ready to proceed.

Weren't the same AED's used on at least the XJ6 Jaguar with HS8 carburettors? I've had two of them, the one first one being with the HD8 setup with a choke solenoid and the second one with the AED (bypass! ). Horrible things. The other point is that many cars haven't got the automatic choke setup anymore and the shield behind the manifold got removed as well. The small bolts reveil small holes in your manifold and it makes the car run bad, sound terrible etc.

OT ;

Your 3500S looks, well, tired but not out. Could be worse, especially from an European perspective. Panels look very tidy, chrome looks good and everything seems to be there. Good luck and keep us updated!
