Quick, fun, seems in good nick, and cost less than a grand. Only things i've spotted wrong are the handbrake doesnt quite return correctly, and i think it's probably due a cambelt/waterpump sometime soon.

Just don't lift off if you're getting enterprising on a roundabout - or so I've heard!
Mind you, I'm an MX5 owner, so not to be taken too seriously!

yeah - the mid engined thing means you're less likely to lose it but once you do it's pretty harsh...

The k-series thing, once you've fixed the gasket properly it isn't going to go again. So if the worst happens i'll spend the money and do the full landrover fix (upgraded oil rails)

Rich.

friend of mine has 3 rover 25s and an mg f all got engines were head gone-if you need spares let me know mate---and yes they can let go after head skim and rebuild :(

Looks a good buy. Number 1 hg fail is from an unnoticed water shortage, so keep an eye on the coolant and you'll be good. Take extra care filling it up, especially the long pipes from the rad.

I've had a k in the midget for 4.5 years now, no hg issues and it sees the limiter every run out.

Think some Fs have a vacuum operated exhaust valve which you can stick open to make a better noise :)

The coolant etc all looks good... Has a lovely burble on the overrun.

I've had 2 other k series cars. 1 with HGF one without. The one with HGF had been mistreated.

Rich.

Hi Rich,

Very jealous, lovely car 8) Sounds like you already know this but don’t believe the negative hype, the K-Series is a fantastic engine, we’ve rallied and raced them for many years. Have a look at Dave Andrews site regarding tuning etc…

and don’t miss the link on the first page to the “K-Series engine page” .

Just like mine! Lovely motor's. The K series is much maligned, but keep an eye on the cooling system, and you should be ok. The long cooling pipes from the rad corrode from the inside out, and stainless steel ones are available, so that's a good idea to replace them. I've also heard its a good idea to put a PRT thermostat in. A lot of the problems with HGF can be exacerbated by the original stat. The temp gauge should sit very slightly below halfway. Don't be tempted to rag it til the oil temp gauge shows a reading either.. The block holds a small amount of coolant relative to the rest of it, due to the length of the coolant pipes and the distance from the rad, the block holds about 1 litre, compared to 4litres outside the stat. The block warms up quickly, and when the stat opens, 4 litres of cold coolant rushes in. Its sometimes cools it enough to shut the stat again, causing hot/cold cycling. If the head gasket's been done, hopefully it'll have the stainless steel locating dowels, instead of the original plastic ones, and an uprated gasket. Also, I get into the habit of checking the coolant level every time I go out in it. A visual check takes seconds. If it starts to drop, find out why. Mine doesn't lose any coolant, ever. You can get a header tank with a warning level switch in it from Browns & Gammons, which alerts you if the level drops. I've had loads of fun with mine in the summer, but watch out for tin worm underneath. My gearbox support arm had almost rusted right through.
God, that sounds horrendous, doesn't it! But don't worry, you'll love it to bits! They're a great little car, for not much money, and lets face it, no-one ever mentions HGF on lotus elises, do they? They used a mid mounted K series too.

Loads of love for the K series over here - Great!

I love mine to bits, it punches well above its weight for a 1400. If I hadn't done the conversion to the midget there'd be an F on the drive. Great seats too (which I've also got in the midget).

I fitted the SS dowels on mine (who thought plastic was a good idea!?) but not the oil rail as the 1400 is (apparently) a bit stiffer with more block present. I've had the 1400 up to 7200rpm with my aftermarket ECU and it's still going strong up there!

I really love it so far. It's an absolute hoot to drive :)

I concur! Great with the top down. Love the way it pulls away off the line. And the way you can throw it into a corner faster than you'd normally dare. :D

That's a shame. A bit less conventional, and quite a bit quicker than an mx5.... Lots of parts bin stuff... metro suspension and subframe parts, pg1 gearbox like the 25/45/75, k series engine. A transverse mid-engine... Plenty of ingenuity to design a nice car on the cheap!
