Hi everybody,

Today, me and my girlfriend got our first P6 today :D
Saved from further abandoning.

we will try to restore it back to its original state. It's our first time we will restore a car.
We see this car a bit as a practice object (sorry  ) to start maintaining the bodywork on our classic Mini.

This P6 drove for the last time in 1985, and was stuffed in a garage till 2 years ago. The last 2 years it was parked outside :( .
It's a 2200TC.

At the moment I have already 2 problems with it.
1) the car was parked in 1st or 3th gear. And I can't move it to neutral or another gear. So we can't push the car unless we press the clutch pedal. I will investigate that later. I hope the gearbox is not broken.
2) the keys of the car are lost, so the steering lock is on and offcourse we can't steer. Luckily, the owner never removed the label with the "unlock steering code". Can I do something with that code? I assume it's a code to order new keys @ Rover. But sinds Rover doesn't exist anymore. I don't know if that is still a possibility? Are they other ways to unlock the steering wheel?

Nevertheless, first thing is ordering myself a Haynes workshop manual :D

picture. not the best one as it was already dark.

Fabulous colour! Welcome to the forum. I imagine if you have a key code you will be OK, my P6B has 3 different keys, 1 for the ignition 1 for the petrol filler cap and a 3rd for the doors.

Welcome to the forum. I hope you sort your problems out as soon as possible, although I reckon it's going to be a bit expensive. Wish I am wrong, but...

Regarding keys, I take three weeks trying to get some copies of my set. Impossible for the time being. Any of the keymakers visited so far has been skilled enough to make the copies, even having in stock the blank keys. I have a new arrangement tomorrow at one of the keymakers, but with just a little hope.

Well, at least I have ONE set. I am luckier than you!

My set seems to be different to the ghce one. I have the ignition key, doors key and the third key, which operates the filler cap, trunk and glove boxes.

Many of us have the Rover Workshop manual (not Haynes), so if you need some information do not hesitate to ask for. I will do all my best with my manual and my scanner.

Ah! Avacado! A very 70's colour.

Don't get a Haynes. If you go onto the UK version of Ebay you'll find ready availabilty of of the real McKoy Rover workshop manual and most importantly the spares manual. The latter has exploded diagrams of the entire car at component level which are often more usefull than the workshop manual.

Hi
You'll probably end up breaking the lock off as a last resort and replacing the column. I have had to do this recently as getting the keys for the later cars is practically impossible. But do not break the actual electrical ignition component at the back of the steering lock.

That said I have quite a large number of old ignition keys for the later cars and if you PM me with the ignition key number, I'll check the ones I have, to see if I can match it for you.

Avocado ...definitely a recognisable 1970's colour!

Hi there,
That is an awesome colour, you can learn a lot from these car's and I hope you enjoy fixing it up, it should be nice on your Belgian roads too when it's all finished, I've toured around Belgium quite a lot in the last few years on my motorbike and really enjoyed it. I hope you have a easy time fixing your car and not too many problems come up.

Why did you end up replacing the column? Remove it along with the lock still fitted to it, then drill or punch out the shear bolts on the lock, and replace with a s/h ign lock. RITRORP.

I don't know if the LHD steering lock is more or less available than the RHD one, but I'm sure there will be one about somewhere.

PM me If you want a quick way to get the steering unlocked.

Actually Harveyp6, you're quite right, your method would be best, I hadn't thought about it being LHD and the availability factor.

The one I replaced recently was already broken, when I rescued the car from a scrapyard.

regards

Harvey- what is RITRORP ? Does the slide hammer method work on a P6 steering lock ?

The gearbox can't be locked solid . The selectors might be jammed - but that's been covered on here elsewhere. Being unable to push the car unless the clutch is depressed suggests the engine is seized ? Or maybe the car will move but not easily ? I think I'd start by taking the gear lever out .Also checking if the engine turns over

wow, loads of great and active enthiousiasts here

About the key/steering lock thing.
Saturday the 2nd january I would like to push the car inside the garage. Therefore it's offcourse necessary to steer the car in a way. So I will look after that for sure how I can disable the steering lock (if possible, without damaging pieces). Another thing I found out is that the steering wheel is a bit lose. I can move it up and down easily about 5cm or so.

@DaveHerns: yes, I hope that the selector or another "turning" point on the gear system is jammed by corrosion.
Is it not normal when a car is in gear you can't push it? The rear wheels just moves a little bit and then blocks. But this problem is not very urgent as for now I can push the car with the clush pedal pressed.

First thing we will do on saturday is clean the car a bit up (because it's a real mess in there), find out how we can (temporarily) disable the steering lock so we can navigate this Rover flagship in her garage.

After that we will gradually control the mechanics, check everything out. Place a new battery (there is none for the moment only an empty hole in the trunk :p ). And see if it will run after 25 years of silence.

Previous owner told me that her father drove it till his dead in 1985. And after that it never leaved the garage until 2 years ago when her mother died and the house of her parents was sold. So let us pray that everything is ok with the engine, and that no cilinders are blocked or something like that.

It's a bit a gamble this car but I bought it for €100 (no, i forgot no zero) so I can't do much wrong :)

PS: o yes, when we got the car I searched for the button to open the bonnet. But I couldn't find it :p Any tips? If someone knows where I can download the normal user manual. I would be happy. Normally, I will get the papers and original manual later from the previous owner.
Yes, Unbelievable maybe. But so far, I've never seen the engine of this car :D

Everyone with their first encounter with the P6 has trouble opening the bonnet!!

Look in the glove box, there is a lever labelled "bonnet lock" and give it a pull!

Now on a RHD this is in the drivers side glove box, if yours is LHD, then would it be in the passenger glove box???

You'll find it

Bri.

Hello and welcome!

The bonnet release handle is on the steering side on a LHD car, inside the glove box. It is normal that the wheels are blocked when the car is in gear, especially if it's in first, you shall be strong to be able to push it. But if you can push it with the clutch engaged, then at least the clutch is free. That often becomes stuck on a car that has been standing a long time.

There are three manuals appropriate for the car. First is the users manual as supplied from new with all cars - what each of the switches do - that sort of thing. This is approximately A5 size and not too thick. Next is the workshop manual, A4 size and very large. Extremely comprehensive and and well worth the money. Don't buy the Haines one when the real McCoy is easily available! Finally is the spares manual, also A4 and very large. You might think you perhaps do not need this, but it has exploded diagrams of how every component on the car fits together and is worth its weight in gold! I strongly recommend buying new paper copies of all three. They are commonly available either actually new or in new condition on the UK Ebay site. Here are a couple of sample links: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROVER-P6-2000...es_Manuals_Litterature_ET?hash=item2eaa1f0b09 , http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROVER-2000-20...QQptZAntiquarian_Books_UK?hash=item2eaa0b4b97 The owners manual is 2000 but is identical bar for some very minor differences on gearbox and of course the engine bore size! Normally there are plenty of 2200 available, also for the spares manual of which there are none today. Some parts of the spares manual are also available from Ian Wilson's excellent Rover-Classics site http://www.rover-classics.co.uk/ and there are decent blow ups of the body on https://www.jrwadhams.co.uk/index.asp.

Hope that helps!

Chris

And the rear suspension.

I agree, particularly the parts books, they often give a far better overview of the way things actually fit together than the WM, so having both doubles your chances of getting things apart and back together again.

Good news!!

Today I went to a company that distribute machines to copy keys for all kind of purposes.
I gave them my unlock number. They have putted the code in their computer and BANG, a CAD-drawing for my P6 came on the screen.

Still they have to order de blank key in Holland. I'm waiting for more information, hopefully the key will fit. (and is it not too expensive because I have no idea what the price will be :p )

Let us pray

NB: Later, we will see what we can do for the keys of the door and the fuel cap

yes mod, after this I will start up a thread in de projects section

At last! Yesterday I got the key copies for my P6. The keymaker had all the three keys needed in stock. No problem.

I had to repeat the visit to the shop twice in order to tune up the new keys but eventually all of them work.

Final price for the complete set has been 6 €.

Well done! that sounds like a real result. I would have found that as difficult as any job I can think of on a P6, so on that basis you're already halfway there!

Chris

Tody I've got the freshly made key for the Rover.

And it fits perfectly. So me and my girlfriend are very happy right now!!

Now we can steer the Rover into his garage (after the snowstorm is passed  )

@Mark Gray: Thank's for the offered help to find a match for our key. But it seems not anymore needed. Unless the code has also a relation to the lock for the doors and the fuel cap?
