MOT - where to take my car?

Well it's that time of year and my car is due its MOT in Feb. This will be the first MOT it will have been through since the car has been in my possession and I'm confident I can get her prepared for it. My main concern is where the best place to take it is. Would any of our Scottish colleagues from around the Edinburgh/Borders area know of any classic friendly garages in my area. I know of such schemes as the Good Garage Scheme which I've used in the past to find a local garage for previous, modern cars and so far the recommended places have been good. Are there any such schemes for classic friendly places?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Dave

Hi Dave.
The best thing you can do if you have been out of the classic car scene for a while is contact your local enthusiasts group, you are bound to have one close by!
Contact you local newspaper or radio station as they probably have covered events!
There, I am sure you will get a few tips on classic freindly MOT'ers, even maybe a classic car owning mot man as well! :D

Hello Dave,

There is a garage in West Linton called the Manor Garage, now I've not had a bad deal with them at any point, however, as with all places you can only trust what you hear so much.

They've built up a rep over the last few years for working on Classic Lotus' and the older guy that works there (may have retired) was certainly sympathetic to the y'old classic. So much so when I was re-building the old flat 4 on my VW, he offered a space in the garage for me to come up and work on the thing under casual tuition.

The only other place I know of is up in Banchory, where there's a guy my Grandfather used to use, that is however, a bit of a trek from Innerleithen.

That said, I largely imagine as with anything/one it depends on the time, the mood, the workload as to how sympathetic someone will be to any car, let alone a classic. MY Bro's Mondeo just failed because one of the indicators was slightly off colour.

Give George Beattie the Edinburgh regional organiser a call he will be able to point you in the right direction.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've contacted the Border Vintage Auto Club to see if they can advise, but George Beattie was my next port of call.

One tip in general, if you can't find a classic friendly garage, is to find a council run test centre (assuming they have them up there !), usually in place for testing taxis etc, but generaly they do public vehicles too. I took my convertible to our local one for years. The big advantage is that they don't do repairs, so have nothing to gain from failing it, being council run however they do tend to be fairly to-the-letter, but at least you know it failed for a real reason not just because the garage had a bit of spare time and they needed the money....

I'm pleased to report that my car has been given a clean bill of health for another year after passing its MOT today. Only one advisory for handbrake performance, which the tester said was just in. Can't say I've had any problems with it holding on even the steepest slopes.

So another year of happy rovering.

All the best
