Mini springing out of 1st gear.

Have just dragged a clean old 1960 Mini out of a lockup. I have had this car for about 4 years and never really bothered with it. Have it all up and running and just MOT'd the thing. The peoblem is it is a 3 synchro gearbox and I have to hold it in first. In fairnes, I know the car has ben out of regular use since the mid 1980s and could do with a bloody good run. But I dont think this will cure having to hold it in 1st.

Any suggestions? I think Minors suffered from this too.

Many thanks.

At the bottom rear of the gearbox case (clutch side) you will find a couple of plugs. The detend springs for the selector rods are behind them. I don't remember offhand which of the two is for the 1st - 2nd but it is worth checking that the springs are not too soft.
If this doesn't help, then it should be an engine/box out job to replace worn out parts (bearings and layshaft maybe gears too).
