Has anyone got a litre or two going spare or even a nsf wing and door in good condition in Mexico brown? I am in south Lincs so will need to be fairly local if poss.

I've recently resprayed the bonnet on Hermione and i bought the paint from Halfords, £25 a litre and they'll mix it while you wait, :D

Is that cellulose ? I'm looking for someone who can mix cellulose and match it to a sample . My car is Lunar Grey but it's been sprayed a lighter shade

I went to Halfords today to get an aerosol of Lunar Grey as they can mix it and fill the aerosol on the premises while you wait.

After 30 minutes of messing around they told me that they cannot mix Lunar Grey because of a new Health & Safety regulation

When challenged they just pointed at the computer which had come up with some jargon to state that it would not allow certain colours to be mixed.

Very strange. :?:

My local motor factor is £22 for a mixed to match aerosol or £38 a litre for cellulose, I can probably get some from Newark autojumble for £35 for 2.5 litres but it will just be "dark brown" rather than proper mexico brown and I dont really want to do the whole car at the moment just sort out some of the battle scars on it. Someone somewhere must have some left over from an old project

I had a Lunar grey 2200 in the early 90's and had a hell of a job then to get some paint that was an exact match, seem to remember their where about 4 different variations in the autocolour paint catalogue but none of them quite matched. I gave up in the end and sprayed it BL Tartan red.....

Popped into another branch of Halfords today and they mixed me up an aersol of Lunar Grey with no problem?

£10.99 for 300ml

500ml was £13.99 - not an aerosol

I have tried it and it and it seems to be right between two of the four shades of Lunar Grey that Sparky already is.

That's better than £38 a litre ! You don't seem to associate Halfords with useful car spares nowadays , it's all bass-boxes and chavvy alloy wheels

I thought that, but I have found them quite helpful of late.

There are certainly a lot of bikes and chav stuff in there, but also a uselful array of tools and bits.

Is that ordinary thick cellulose or ready to spray thinned stuff like they put in rattle cans?

It's an enamal based paint that you use as you would cellulose,...buy it by the litre and it will need thinning and you will need access to a compressor/spraygun
Rattle cans are already thinned and can be used without the use of a compressor, but can be expensive if you have a large area to paint.

Bonnet and bootlid need painting in etch primer first as they are ally. If you have flaked ally, it needs completely taking back to clean, shiny metal. Any pitting needs cleaning up and then filling.

I bare metalled mine, then filled pits, etched, primer filled and then painted. Aerosole cans are not really the way forward. The paint will not cover anywhere near as well, as well as having next to no fan. They are ok for small blow ins, but thats about it. I have painted panels out of a can, but it is a complete lash up and not ideal for a car you are going to keep yourself.

As for going to Halfords for paint, well you cannot expect a lot. You need a proper car refinidhing shop. You will never see a painter in Halfords buying paint. My local paint supplier is "Cars" in Essex. There are quite frankly loads all over the country. Tell them the colour and year and they will mix it. Do not get 2K for home use as it has isocyanide in it, althought the finish is deep, has less sinkages and gives a better finish. Celly is good, mixed 50/50 with good high gloss or anti bloom thinnners. Any repairs should be bar coated and primer filled. In fact bar coating all old surfaces is not unheard of as the thinners often livens up old paint. Obviouly though youll need a decent compresser ... ideally with 14 cfm displacement plus (about £300 from machine mar) and single phase if to be used in your domestic workshop.

I am fairly well set up equipment wise, when I get round to finishing my red V8 in the spring it will be my 4th P6 respray although I havnt done one for 13 years(it is getting done all over!). The brown 2000 on the other hand is just going to get a quick tidy up, the majority of the car has never been painted since it rolled off the production line in 1972, the roof is the worst bit as it looks like its been parked under a tree and the birds have s**t all over it which has eaten into the paint. Door and wing have a couple of dents (probably caused by some previous elderly owners dubious driving abilities). The plan is to tidy up the 2000 and move it on when I get the V8 done so I dont really want to spend loads on it. (Mrs wont let me keep both  )

If you just want a few aerosols, I'd try your local motor factors.

I was round visiting my area leader in the TR Register to have a look at his TR6 which he was in the middle of cutting, fabricating, welding, spraying sections. The idea being that I'll get a good idea of where they rot when I start looking for my TR towards the end of this year! He'd been to our motor factors in Northampton (place called Sayers) to buy his aerosols. A bit pricey of course but he didn't own a compressor! He took along a panel asking them to match this TR6 green. The resulting colour match is excellent - impossible to tell where he'd been spraying, which is the finish we want to achieve. I shall be making a trip myself soon - once I get the girl back on the road, only I shant be taking a panel, I'll take the car!

Halfords do an OK job for the mass market, but we need something a bit more specialist.

Bri.
