Mechanical fuel pump reassembly

Hi all,
I'm refurbishing my mechanical fuel pump and all going well until trying to refit the diaphragm pull rod over the hook on the link. Spent ages trying to locate it without luck. I can feel the hook with the rod but just can't hook it over. Got sore thumbs now, so wondering if there's a technique to use or any tips on how to do it.

OK, sorted. My wife had a try and managed to do it first time. I think i'll ask her to rebuild the carbs now.
