Lucas spots

Hi all,

Experienced one of the little joys of classic motoring at the gas station today. An English expat approached me to chat about the car and his learning to drive in his father's 2000, saying he still had a pair of spotlights from it sitting around that he said he'd like to bring over from the UK on his next trip and donate to yours truly. :D He said they were ordered for/with the car in 1968, a round type fitted on top of the bumper. One with a blue lens, one clear. Made by Lucas. Of course, I have yet to see them but am curious what they're about. Anyone know the type?

A pair like that usually consists of 1 fog lamp and 1 driving lamp ( a bit like full beam )

If you connect them up you will see different beams (pattern/shape) of light given off from each one. The driving lamp will give a long narrow beam to light up the road in the far distance, typically used on country roads where there are no street lights. The fog light will give off a shorter wider beam to light up the road closer to the car and more at ground level.

Sounds similar to the Square 8s then. Let's see what comes of it. Just haven't ever seen different coloured lenses on a P6 before...

I don't recall Lucas doing blue lenses. I have seen yellow lenses. Also, Notek did the fabulous 'blue spot' lights (see ebay #200483966788 for example) and they appear to have done them with a full blue lens too.
Noteks were factory options on the earliest cars ('63-'65 ish) before being replaced by rectangular Cibies.

I hope you get those lenses will be good to see what they look like, I have a set of fogs ready to go on mine, they are all ready on in the virtual world (photoshop) unfortunatly not period but they do look the business!

Graeme, I think the only way you'll get them to fit there is if you are happy for them to protrude 4" ahead of your bumper! There is a reason why they go outside of the overriders. :)

Oh yes, I like that, would suit Bruiser very well. I have always planned extra lights for him/her (can never decide  ) but haven't got round to it yet. I do have four NOS round lights which would do the job nicely though clip-on covers for them would be good as they don't have any.
Though I have a feeling that fitting the bumper irons to accept the bottom lights would be illegal here, yes?
