London To Bath 1963

I signal him with my headlights........ And again......no response so I sound my horn, then doesn't know why the guy gives him the V sign. Quality

That made me chuckle too ,and the chap in the red Herald

I love the motorway scene too! If you did that today there would be a very nasty response. Can't help thinking the Red Menace Herald is a patsy for the purposes of filming.

Hi, I can't help wondering if you did the journey today on the same roads whether
you would make the same progress. Bearing in mind all the heavy traffic would be
on the M4 and you would be only dealing with local traffic.

3 minutes into the film the narrator tells us he is double-declutching as he changes up from 2nd to 3rd. I know the Moss box in the older Jags wasn't the best but what on earth is the point of double-declutching to match gear speeds when there issynchromeshto do just that very thing?
Even for the 60's (about the time I started driving- oops) this guy comes over as a Boring Old Fart.

Totally agree, when we were taught it was necessary to double de-clutch to get down to first ( no syncro on some cars)
only if you wanted to be in first before you stopped.

My first car, 1955 Ford Consul, only had three gears. And it was better to d-d going down from 3 to 2.

A friends dad was an advanced motorist back them, and sounded just as boring as this BOF.

Jim.

Hi, You don't have to. But if you do the synchro cones don't have to, and they last longer.

Moreover, if you get into the trouble to d-d the changes are far sweeter, will less resistance in the lever, especially on those quick ones.
On spirited driving over mountain passes where i am constantly changing rapidly between 2nd and 3rd, d-d and rev matching ties up with the whole experience and adds to the pleasure. It may be a full (reverse excepted...) synchromesh gearbox but this technology was relatively new back then, and far from perfected.
On moderns it makes no difference, it feels (or you can't feel anything) the same no matter how you change gears.

Priceless , i used to drive some of those roads in my HGV days . and at 7.10 mins in he says " i,m not playing after you Claud " When did we stop talking like that :?: :D
