A local library has 84 members of which 52 are female. There are 18 members who are more than 50 years of age, and 13 of the female members are also more than 50 years of age. How many of the members are male and 50 years of age or less?

Ron.

Yes indeed,...27 is the correct answer. Well done Paul and well done Richard, Phil and Darth for confirmation of the correct answer.. :D

Because of the word "also", I get 14 for the answer.leaving this word out , 27 works.

You must not leave the word "also" out in order to achieve the correct answer. The 13 female members who are more than 50 years of age are within the total of 18 members who are over 50 years of age.

Then the word "also" is superfluous?

Hello OrganDoctor,

Hmm...no.

Can you please write out how you answered the question? Be sure to show all of the mathematics that you used.

Ron.

It's a very minor point, but "also" means "likewise", "too", "besides" and especially "in addition", and , if considered as important to the puzzle, makes it unsolvable.

This is my cross to bear as a former editor

Hello OrganDoctor,

I agree with you in that I understand the meaning of the word, but what I don't know is how you approached the question. In any case I took the question from a high school text book and the solution seemed perfectly straight forward to me.
