Kilometer speedometer - Instruments

Eurocracy is creeping like a fog here in Ireland --- our speed limits are going metric on the 20th of January. No more miles per hour....

I'm looking for a working kilometres per hour speedometer for a right-hand drive 1974 Rover 3500 automatic (UK specification). This type od speedometer was fitted to P6s destined for the Australian market.

Can anyone help?

The speedometer fits into the instrument cluster - Would not a speedometer from a LHD fit?

My "miles" speedo has both kms and miles on it. I do know where it might (emphasis on might) be possible to find a speedo from a LHD car.

Hi Zebedee37.

My own car has km/hour in smaller characters inside the MPH characters. I'd like to get an Austalian speedometer where the main characters are km/hour, just to make it easier to read the speed.

I'm not certain that a LHD speedo will fit; I know that a LHD rev counter definitely won't. I'll check the parts manual later to see if it sheds any light on this.

I'd really appreciate any help in sourcing the right unit.

Regards,

John Larkin

There were four speedometer types listed for cars dependind on the configuration of MPH/KPH and RHD/LHD. There was additionally a special RHD/KPH Australian police speedo.

The part number of the speedo I want is 563310.

John.

I may be COMPLETELY off the mark - but here goes!

Were the early Range Rover clocks not the same? How about the Marina or Allegro etc? I'm sure they were at least similar - worth a try on other sites if that is the case.

Just a thought!

Johnny. ???

Hi John,
Were all the SA cars RHD and in Kms ???? maybe as a long shot go to the respective ebay locations.

As for the Km issue, I asked Dad about it and he replied that he gave up reading speedos back in the mid 70's. Then again he resides out past clifden in connemara, were speed is the last thing on anyones mind !!!!

good luck

I too would like a RHD km/hr speedo, but for a different RHD country - mine will soon be sampling the wide open boulevards of Thailand. (Seriously good roads for anyone who fancies driving when on holiday there) It will be joining at least one other P6 - a pale yellow 3500S seen in Pattaya on the Gulf of Thailand coast.

When you find a source of supply can you let me know John and I'll come in with you for a bulk buy!

Chris

Hi Chris,

I got a used one from Scott's Old Auto Rubber in Australia. I fitted it about a month ago. It cost A$60 plus A$20 P&P (about £30 all-in).

John Larkin.

Thanks for the info John.

About two days before I was about to ring Scot's I had a stroke of luck which sheds a bit of light on speedo's generally.

Popped in to Colin Gould at Faringdon and it turned out he has a supply of *NEW* lhd kph speedo's.

First discovery was that they have mph on them as well! In an inner ring in the same way as we have kph on our mph speedo's.

Then we set about trying to figure out what made them lhd. Turns out it is the pressed metal cover on the back only! This carries a peg which locates the angle drive to point in a particular direction - obviosly opposite when you change drive sides!

Solution - swap the tin cover for the one off your old speedo! 3 minutes and 4 screws (assuming you don't drop them)

This throws up a conclusion about speedo's. There are two varieties of speedo only - kph and mph - and two varieties of tin backing cover - lhd and rhd. The four varieties of speedo listed are therefore permutations of these items!

All those needing a new speedo head take note and don't be frightened off by a lhd part number.

**QUESTION** anybody know whether a kph speedo with mph graduations on the inner ring as described is legal for the British MOT?

Another tip. If you can only get a V8 speedo and you have a 4 cyl car then get the speedo recalibrated at somewhere like www.jdo1.com . Same applies to anyone changing rear axle ratio or fitting tyres with a non standard rolling radius.

Ps I've found a superb automatic calculator for those challenged by tyre choice or diff ratio: go to the Dutch SD1 site on www.roversd1.nl and click on "bodyshell" then on "driveline calc".

Cheers

I don't think it matters - I have a LHD imported car (not my Rover) that shows only km/h and no mph at all and it has an MoT no problem. In fact I don't think you need a speedo at all for the MoT. My brother's Volvo 480 went for several years without a working speedo, as to repair it would have cost more than the car was worth!

If you import a car to UK now you do have to have a mph speedo. However you can apparentle get away with just placing stickers on the face marking 30mph 40 mph etc
