k & N filter clean

hey guys wot is the best thing to clean the K & N of my v8 as where the old engine was playing up they have gone black any idea how to clean them

You can get a K&N service kit with the correct cleaning fluid and red dyed filter oil to put back on the filter. Depending on how dirty it is it shouldn't take too long to do. All you do is spray the cleaner onto the filter, let it soak for a while and wash out under the tap, and repeat if necessary. Once fully dried, you carefully apply the red oil to the pleats, let it soak in and refit the filter. I think the kits are available from Halfords or other motor factors for about £15-20, but I've always taken my filters to work and do them there

yea i found those cleaners on ebay did not know that i could re die them as well the thing is when i had my old engine it was dieing and running so bad it was just back firring and the filters got very very dirty i will up load a pic so you could have a look

i want to re paint the engine again as it got marked when we had to change the engines over but nothing to worry bout the worst is done
this is when it just been finshed with the old engine

I was given some black K&N's a few years ago. We only knew they were genuine when we scraped the muck and crud off the tops and saw the K&N logo. I washed them out under the tap and carefully picked out the bigger lumps (usually I dig out crusty black flies and wasps from the ones at work  ) then soaked them in the cleaner and rinsed about three times, then applied the red dye twice and they came up like new :D . As long as the dirt hasn't damaged the filter material they should come up well and continue doing their job as advertised.

yea well i will give it a try well were the lines should be straight they have come a bit bent but i am sure if i am carefull i should be able to straighten them out ( i hope )

Hi, as a matter of interest, having never used K&N filters. How often do you have to do this to them? Do they keep
cleaner ( flies and wasps etc ) if hidden in the filter box?

I've had worse when I submerged mine in thick muddy water offroading

It maybe worth making some sort of shroud or something to put them in to help keep the filters clean. I think Chris (Chrisyork) hid some similar filters inside a standard airbox with a cool air feed from the front of the engine bay?

The pleats are soft and will go back into shape easily with some gentle finger pressure. Remember the red dyed oil is the filter material, as it is slightly sticky and catches the dirt, so the filter requires washing out and re-oiling peridically to keep it doing it's job.

right thats ok as long as i can do somthing with them as i dont relly want to go and buy a new set again yea seen the stuff in halfords for 12.99 so will be getting that stuff might get it from ebay think it about £10 from there

I guess only when they change from red (or whatever colour they come in) to a dirty colour as that would signify they are coated in dirt. There are theories that say a light coating of dirt is beneficial to them, as the pleated material is quite open compared to paper type filters. Basically, there's a reason why the flow more air than paper filters.

Every car that I've had which has had the filter in a box in the intake has always filled with dead bugs, flies, leaves, twigs and other debris, but none of those had a basic pre-filter, such as a wire mesh cover that would stop all but the smaller flies getting in. I've not had a K&N in a box yet but it depends where the air feed comes from and if there's something to stop the large bits getting in as to how long it would last between being cleaned.

I have K & N air filters on my engine, and the instructions advise to clean and re oil every 50,000 miles (80,000km) or sooner if used in dusty conditions. I rotated mine through 180 degrees after 20,000 miles (32,000km) and I'll probably clean and re oil them between 40 and 50,000 miles.

Ron.
