Info on Huntsman please

I've got my eye on a P6 Auto again :).

It's Tobacco Leaf with Sundym and the roof / C roofthingy needs to be replaced / re-vyniled. Now I hate Tobacco Leaf by itself, but combined with Huntsman and Sundym, I think presents as a most typical and rather nice P6.

I've read several times on this forum that there's three shades of Huntsman roof. Can anyone explain or give links on examples of the colours? Are there any other spec differences between Huntsman P6's and "normal" ones?

Ah, and of course ..., Were the C-posts also in vinyl and where does one obtain the proper vinyl to do the roof?

Appreciate any answers.

Bas

Oh, happy 2012 to all the Rover friends here!

Hi Bas

As Pilkie will explain at length, Huntsman in any shade is currently unobtainium in vinyl. Both the roof and 1/4 panel are vinyl covered, when a car has Huntsman. In standard trim the I/4 panel is covered in Black vinyl.

There are a number of options, first is to use Black vinyl for both roof and 1/4 panel. Probably not so good on a Tobacco Leaf car. Next up is to source 2nd hand Huntsman roof and 1/4 panels and simply swap them over - everything just unbolts, including the roof. These are more common than you might suppose. Third is to paint the roof, 1/4 panels and sills to match the rest of the body - that looks surprisingly good with Tobacco Leaf. Finally, choose another colour of vinyl that you think will set the car off. A red brown springs to mind?

As to the three colours, cars with Mexico Brown definitely have a much lighter shade of Huntsman. I'm fairly sure that all the other Huntsman's are very close indeed, if not identical, in shade. with the sole exception of the very small number of VIP's done in Platinum, which had a red-brown shade.

The Rover is not the only car hampered by the non availability of Huntsman vinyl. A lot of contemporary BMC cars - Allegro and Princess in particular, got Huntsman roofs. It seems to be the same shade, but I've never seen the Rover and BMC equivalents next to each other to compare directly. There are therefore a number of people looking at having a run of material produced.

Hi Chris,
Thank you for your elaborate respons!
I wonder whether Toballo Leaf for body and roof would look good, I'll try my hand at Photoshop as soon as I find the time.
An advantage to the original not being available is that I'm free to find another "strong" alternative. And I will have a look at red-brown as you suggested :).

I'haven't bought the car yet, but this info is useful if any haggling over the price would be in order.

Thanks again,
Bas

I also believe getting a decent headlining is a nightmare. Was told that Aston bought up the old stocks for their cars.

Well ive contacted loads of trimmers in the UK and the main automotive trim suppliers, and nobody has any huntsman brown everflex vinyl in any shade!
At least they are not admitting it if they have!
Contacted the guy who's dad patented the Tudor Webasto,is still running a trimming company, and no luck there, even the close match he suggested is now out of stock!
It is definately time for a canny trimming, trimming supply business to get a roll made up,as most cars with it on will be about due to renew it after 30+ yrs!
Only problem is that 750-1000mtrs has to be produced, and at £17 a mtr retail thats a lot of up front investment!
At least they would have the worldwide market as sole supplier!!
I really dont want to use special paint to make it match,as Clive Annable has suggested, but if thats the only option then maybe I will have to!!
Ah well, got a few more possible options to explore.

Hi Dave,
I understand their point. Problem being of course that we cannot get financial commitment from enough people to make it viable. I personally do not have the spare finances to take on this responsibility. And lots of people will say they would like it to be available, but at the end of the day won't order at that price or pay, leaving the one who commissioned the lot with the damage ...

If I would get orders enough, prepaid!! I would gladly take it on, but not just on "yeah, I would like 3 meters" ..
But thank you for your reply anyway !!

P.S. As i'm personally not Taliban in being one hundred percent completely original, I'm now looking at "good match" vinyl options in the States, albeit reluctantly. I'll also have a chat with a friend of mine who (being an insurance troubleshooter) knows more channels than we might. Let you know.

P.P.S I Might also have a look at the China option. Anyone got a small sample in the right colour, unbleached by light? Got some time to spare ...

I rang Aston engineering today to see if they had any of the correct headinging material available for the P5B. They gave me the details of the trimmer they use - Dave Beswick.

I spoke to Dave and he informed me that all of the material ( he referred to it as Oatmeal) was gone and that he had been in touch with the manufacturers and that the minimum order was 1000m (40 rolls of 25m). He had spoken to some other trimmers to see if there was interest in clubbing together, but has only got commitments for a few rolls.

The total cost for the 1000m is circa £6k.

So my question is, is there anyone as indivisuals or as a club, interested in committing to buying some in advance? What other cars used this material? did all the P6s use it? Did all of the P5s use it or only the P5B? did the P4 use it?

It is a long shot, but the only way this will happen is if people agree to buy in in advance, so just putting it out there for you all to digest.

I would commit to a few cars worth
