Indicator warning lights on dash

Gents, especially all you knowledgable types...

Ok, the drivers handbook says that when you indicate right the RH warning light flashes on the dash and when you indicate left the left one flashes.....

The wiring diagrams confirm this is what should happen...................

The actual car wiring and dashboard PCB tracks suggest otherwise and indeed on my car both LH and RH warning lights flash when indicating either left or right..........

How do other people's indicator warning lights work?

cheers

Dave

As it says in the handbook. If it was supposed to work the way yours does, why not have just one warning light instead of two? More wiring for you to sort out! :)

Thanks Harvey

That's what I thought, I just wanted to check before I do some further invest.

A further question for you then, if you take one bulb out and indicate the other way does the warning light still work. I took one bulb out at a time and neither flashed when indicating which suggests the bulbs are connected in series, clearly they can't be to operate independently.

.....and next question............

where is the ignition control relay fitted as my ignition light does not come on and I suspect it's not getting an earth through the relay as there is power at the connector to the dash?

cheers again

Taking one bulb out just means that one doesn't work, the other one works as normal.

If yours is a later car, with the 18ACR alternator then IIRC there isn't a relay, if you have the early 11AC then there's a warning light control on the RHS in the drivers glovebox.

It should have a supply to the bulb when the ignition is on, which should be earthed inside the alternator itself. If it's an 18ACR you need to remove the multiplug on the alternator, and earth the smallest of the 3 wires, if this puts the warning light on the fault is in the alternator.

If you have 11AC I'll have to refresh my memory.

A pic of the alternator would help.

Ok indicators first:

Both my warning lights definitely stop working if I take one bulb out. So, I've taken each indicator bulb (not warning light bulb) out in turn and with the front bulb out the rear still flashes, as do the warning lights. With both indicator bulbs out the warning lights stay on constantly, but do not work at all when indicating the other way......bizarre! :?

I think I'm gonna disconnect all connectors and take all the bulbs out and check for stray earth paths.... but that's a job for tomorrow.

As for the ignition light.....I have a Lucas warning light control on the RHS in the driver's glovebox.

That's fitted with the early 11AC alternator then. Initially I'd check the warning light control unit by substitution. If that's not possible it's a case of working out how the system works from the wiring diagram.

Has this car got a towbar and socket?

No towbar fitted, but a few of the dreaded scotchloks dotted around......

Majority of the wiring looks pretty original.

Amazing
Can you have both warning lights flashing if only one side's indicators are on ? I'd have thought left and right sides indicators and warning lights were wired together and separately
Anything to do with hazard warning lights ?

Yeah they should be wired together and separately.

I thought about hazards causing problem. Hazards work fine and the switch flashes, but the warning lights don't...... again which I think they should as all the hazard switch does is feed a supply to both sides at the same time and to the same point that the indicator switch does. Since this point also feeds the warning lights......

Woohoo!

Fixed!

Bad earth from Socket B pin 11 so the lights were finding their own earth. I cleaned up the earth wire (Light green & purple) terminal at the RHS bulkhead inside the driver's glovebox and it all started working as it should.

Thanks to all for their tips.

cheers
