Indicator lights running very slow

Hello All – no doubt this issue has been raised before but I cannot find any exact links.

My indicator speed is slow at best and required revving of engine to maintain normal ‘expected’ flashing speed.

Having replaced the relay unit (similar but non Rover part) and earth checked – I get no improved performance and instead hear only a rather ‘tinny’ sounding new relay.

On an old MGB of mine, I had the same problem and an old auto electrician I new fitted a replacement relay or similar to ‘draw a higher current’ as he described it (not clear of exact part name).

Has this concern been addressed or rectified before on this site.
Would be very interested for your comments as the wife refuses to drive the car as a result – which is not such a bad thing I suppose!!
Cheers

Make sure all bulbs and earth contacts are clean , for the cost involved a set of new bulbs might be a good idea
Normally a new flasher unit cures this but you may want to check the alternator output and battery condition

Hi,

Detail from P6B wiring diagram - hopefully yours is the same!

Key:
79 Flasher Unit
82 Hazard warning Switch
97 Indicator Switch

Sounds like a low voltage problem..are you getting 12V at the live feed to the flasher unit? (Green).

From the flasher unit, the 12V path to the direction indicator switch is via the hazard warning switch (Light Green/Brown tracer). Check the voltage you're getting on this wire with the indicator on and the hazards off.
Do the lamps flash slowly with the hazard switch on? With the hazard switch on, no voltage runs through the direction indicator switch, and you should see 12V at the Green/White and Green/Red wires out of the hazards switch.

Cheers,

Hi Stan and Dave

Much appreciation for your time and efforts with this question - I'll go through your recommended checks and get back to you with teh results.

Thanking you

Simon

You might not get 12v with the engine ticking over , lights on etc . That's why the flasher slows down and recovers when the alternator kicks in , I had this problem , my indicators virtually stopped flashing at tickover but a new flasher unit cured the problem .
I just bought a normal metal flasher and this was years ago .A modern solid state one would be even better
I think you need to get the wires on the right way round , one is the feed supply , the other goes to the lamps

Tony - Regretfully no as I have not managed to bargain a slot of time with the family to spend on the P6, following Stan and Dave's advice / suggestions in the earlier posts.

If you're having similar problems and sort it out I would be very interested.
Cheers
Simon

Hope you get your slot soon! I recall a similar problem some years ago with the indicators. I also recall it being due to either a rusty earth or water getting to the unit itself. I can remember however that this was all because of a very minor hitherto unnoticed leak in the rubber windscreen seal (bottom corner, drivers side) allowing a drip or two of water to enter the car when it rained heavily which then somehow find its way to the proximity of the unit. I remember this because when I had fixed the problem with the unit going slow the rubber windscreen surround had to be replaced to prevent a recurrence.

Let us know how you get on. Cheers Tony Bunting
