Improving performance

Lucas are remanufacturing under different ownership. I fitted an aftermarket from a local motor spares sop and wondered why car was not running on all 8. Took off cap and it had a split in ot. Bought a genuine "Lucas" and it ran as sweet as a nut. I can recommend modern Lucas.

My new blue dizzy cap turned up yesterday and fitted onto the dizzy no problem with the Pertronix kit fitted too so clearly there are differences in caps. Unfortunately when I fired her up she ran like a bag of nails. So I put the ignition back to it's original configuration and it runs perfectly. Methinks there is a problem with the Pertronix Ignitor kit so I'll call them today to see what they can do.

Hello Dave.
I'm sure they would'nt have sent you the wrong part, but just in case, make sure that you haven't been sent one for a 4 cylinder. You can tell by the marks on the ring the goes on to the dizzy, 4 = 4 cyl, 8 = 8 cyl etc..
It will run rough, so you'll need to adjust the timing, and probably tickover as well. I assume that you have a 12-volt feed from the ignition? As the 6-volt coil will not be enough to run the pertronix.

regarding earlier comment on spark plug sockets, the one in my 1/2" drive set would not fit in the recess and the one from my 3/8" drive set was a very neat fit (bordering on interference fit) so had to borrow one from my 3/8" set from work and that was ok, turns out the work one was 20 thou smaller on the OD than the neat fitting one. all are reputable brands. thought I had a factory machining error at first, mind you I haven't compared the sockets on my '76 doner car yet!

Regards

I tried grinding down the outside of a plug socket but it was too hard .I ended up cutting a section out of an old box spanner and welding the two bits back together .A bit of hose inside protects and holds the plugs . A 7/8" socket and short extension fits the other end on the outside of the box spanner. You could use a tommy bar through a hole but that takes too long
