impossible to start my P5 3500 V8 automatic

Hello,

My 1968 P5 drove without problems out and into my garage, after several years parking. Suddenly, after having changed several times from low to reverse, I stopped on "P". When I tried to start again I heard the relay but could not start, neither on "P" than on " N".
I mean the issue is in the switch which prevents form starting on other positions as "P" or " N".
The car has been entyrely painted but I did not yet raised the bumpers, so it is difficult to push or pull it without damage.

Thanks to who could advise me.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

If you can hear a 'click' noise when you try to start it I would guess that it's either a starter motor, earth lead or battery issue. If not then Harvey is probably your man.

I notice you're in france from your registration - so if you don't understand anything we write just say and we'll try and help:)

If it's clicking first thing i'd try would be a jump lead between the engine and body of the car.

Hope that's some help,

Rich

The switch that stops the starter motor working other than in "P" & "N" is the inhibitor switch, and that is positioned in the circuit between the ignition switch and the starter relay, so if you can hear the starter relay clicking when you turn the key to "Start" then the problem isn't with the inhibitor switch, it's with the relay, or something further down the circuit towards the starter motor. Check through the circuit with a test lamp, starting by making sure that you are getting a live supply from the inhibitor switch at the relay with the key turned, to eliminate that, and carry on from there.

Hello,

I check and revert to you for feedback as soon as the temperature in my barn will be positive at a moment !!!

Other question please : we will leave to Algarve in Portugal. Do you know something about good mechanics and coachbuilders there for restauration.

Many thanks to you both Rockdemonp6 and Harvey.

It is easy to by pass the switch.

The relay is next to the heater in the engine bay. Just short them out, ensure car is in park. Make sure you have power going to the relay first.

Get someine to turn the key and listen near the starter trying to engage. If it is trying give it a tap as sometimes that helps.
