Steve,

If it is just the switch then you can buy them new.

Series landrovers ( and others) use the same switch which is also available from your local LSUK.

Is it the electrical switch or the barrel etc.

Colin

hi again,

I have had a look at the rover parts catalogue and the switch isn't exactly the same.

The difference is that the wiring is riveted on to the switch and they have bullets on the end the land rover version has spade connectors.

If you are handy enough then you could easily convert it by puting female spades on the end of the existing wires.

I have the part numbers if anyone is interested.

I had exactly the same problem with mine.

Car just stopped dead one day and wouldn't go again. I tried everything and eventually towed it to an auto electrician who charged £30 to say he couldn't fix it.

Messed and mawled with the thing for days - suddenly it sprang into life again!!

That HAD to be it.

Johnny. ???

SORRY - SHOULD BE ON BRAKE RES THREAD!! DOH

Many thanks Colin, that worked a treat with the land rover switch. I just cut the old wires off and soldered and heat shrinked the wires to the new switch.
The only slight problem i found is that when you turned the key fully to crank it, the switch went slightley to far, and the starter motor stopped.
The way i got round this was to make the goove in the steering lock which locates the switch slightly wider by cutting the gooved about 1mm wider then turning the switch back a little and doing the screws up there.
Anyway its all running fine now.
Many thanks again.

Hi Steve,

Thanks good to know it actually works.

Did you buy the switch new? Just wondering because I bought one for my stage 1 v8 landrover (which is how I knew they were the same basic switch) that cost me about £17 but if I had realised before the guy ordered it in for me I would have went to LSUK as I reckon it would only cost around £8-£10 but never checked.

I also spotted the windscreen washer switch to be the same the knob being the only difference.

Hi Colin
I bought the switch from www.dls-uk.co.uk, they were very helpfull and it cost about £12 with delivery.
Im going to sell the car as i just have no space to store it as im just about to build a house. Do you know the best place to advertise this if so give me a call.
Many thanks
Steve ???

Hi Steve

There will be a club magazine out soon I would stick it in there, you could also put it in the classic car weekly which is free. the classic magazines charge and it would be jan before the ad goes in.

Where abouts in the country are you? maybe the local co-ord may know if anyone is looking for one.

Colin

Colin

Im near Swanage in Dorset.
That sounds like a good idea.

Oh Just one other thing to point out with the switch is that on the Rover switch it has a mechanism inside it to prevent you from restarting after you have already started, but the landrover one has nothing, but to be honest i prefer the Landrover one.
Many Thanks again for your help.
Steve :)
