ignition light

Hi guys .
May of posted this twice . Not overly worried , but when up to temp , no electrical equeptment on , ticking over ( 550 rpm ) the ignition light flickers . A blip of the throttle puts it out , but i'm wondering what happens on a day i'm out with lights , wipers , heater etc on ? Good quality , newish battery . Is the charging system marginal any way ?

Turn the tickover/idle up to 600-650 as per book that will probably cure it, mine flickers when in drive now and then and if it drops to about 500rpm.
Could also be a slightly loose fan belt, slightly worn alt brushes, faulty regulator in alt.
As long as the amp is showing 0 or + when you are driving and not - then it should be fine under load with lights etc!

Hi Pilkie
Yes only when in drive ,( Got the tick over low as poss on advice to give sooth gear engagement )
So pretty much normal then !

Its fairly normal yes.
Re smooth gearchange, does yours clunk into gear when you engage D or R if tickover is high?
Obviously make sure you have your foot firm on brake, and give it a minute to settle tickover before engaging, especially when choke is on,as some can be a bit sharper than others, and if your actual driving gear changes are a bit sharp then you may need to adjust the kickdown cable a smidge as this operates the valves.
Have you had the oil and filter done in the gearbox? does oil look red and smell sweet? could be filter dirty.
Am sure Harvey will have better words of advice for you on the auto set up.

Hello Stina,

The behaviour of the ignition light that you describe is normal, and not indicative of worn alternator brushes or a problem with the voltage regulator.

In drive at idle, rpm will be lower than in park so the possibility of the ignition light flickering or lighting is possible. In park, idle speed as Pilkie indicated should be in the 600 to 650rpm range.

Ron.

Hi Pilkie
Got an on going thread with Harvey . Not doing enough miles to get a good idea of what is going on . After top end engine work i have got kick down to work . Changes smooth up and down the box on the move . Just a little harsh going into reverse when warm . Been lowering the pressure half a turn each time i go out . Still maintaining kick down . Have no referance point so don't know how far to go . On a warmed up transmission , light , constant throttle it changes up 1/2 about 9 mph . 2/3 about 15 mph . If you push it , it holds the cogs longer and changes up smooth still !
Driven autos before , never owned one !

Ps oil clean , strawberry red . It does drop a little into the drip tray if you don't use it for a few days, but not i think enough to worry about .

As every one has already said, ....and I would add my own 2 cents (sorry new P) ign light on idle is a standard option on the V8 with ACR alternators fitted. 650 RPM is wot the book says for an auto, something about keeping the auto box pump pressure at the right place  though if it were a manual as low as you can go. When I get picky about the ign light glowering at me on idle it is usually with the stick in Drive, easy solution put it in P and watch the rpm rise and the light extinguish.
If you could find a smaller alternator pulley I am sure the problem would be cured with no other ill effect as you are unlikely to ever over rev the alternator in everyday use, around town my car rarely rises above 2000 rpm and generally lives around 1200 rpm, only at fast highway speeds are you ever likely to get out side of the design limits of the alternator rpm and were it ever an issue you could upgrade to a 4 speed ZF box.....problem solved.
