Idle Problem

Hi all, hope I can get some help.. I have an idle problem (sort of) the v8, after a blip on the throttle (say up to 1500 rpm) drops to a very low idle (say 400rpm) and if it doesn't stall, slowly comes back up to idle speed. Also it's stalled a few times this week while in Drive stopped at the lights. This is all with a warm (been running 10-25 mins) motor.

I have electronic ignition, and have cleaned up all the plugs, there's oil in the throttle dampers. Also at revs, the motor is running as strong as ever.

Any advice would be fantastic.. thanks in advance.

Does it sound as if it's misfiring or running rough when the idle speed drops and then clear when it comes back up?

Hi there BB, I haven't noticed a misfire at all, but it would be hard to tell because at those low rpm's it's struggling anyway. Also I forgot to mention all the HT leads have been replaced in the last couple of years as well.

I'm going for a bit of a run today, hopefully that'll clear things out a bit.

Well, it seems to have settled down.... there's 3 things I've done..

1.... Replaced the crank filter, was a little blocked. The shop said it just looked like a fuel filter so that's what I got. (I'd never thought of it before! Thanks Rovertron!

2.... A bit of a run, $20 worth of gas and copious use of 2nd gear (every man and his horse float was out today!)

3.... A good dose of CRC inside the distributor cap, as I suspected the auto advance-retard was sticking.

With any luck all is now good.

Good news. I feel great sympathy for you having just spent a week or so trying to sort out the idle on mine. Opened up the plug gaps to 35thou in the end (factory spec for 3.9 engine) and all was solved.

hmmm, I had exact same problem when trying to set my idel to lower rpm; around 800 mark.

I couldn't get it to stop but when fitting new needles, I found that one of the jets was much lower than the other so I raised it. This lwer jet meant the carb was running richer thus making it impossible to turn down the idle - the screw was off the cam.
