HS6 Carbs

Hi All,
Can anyone advise on the following before I start tinkering about, the carbs on my V8 are HS6 type (the ones with the float chambers on the front) last week I started the engine but before it burst into life it sort of spluttered a bit, wouldn't catch hold, then after a couple of attempts it did start, then it ran okay, last Tuesday we had a nice day so I thought off we go, started okay, ran okay, then I left it for about 45 mins, didn't seem too keen, a couple of attempts, fired up then a whiff of petrol, then ran okay, stopped again and left it for about 20 mins, then again didn't seem too keen, spluttered a bit, wouldn't start, tried again with a bit more pressure on the throttle, fired up but ran erracticly (mis fireing) held the throttle down and quite soon it ran okay again!!, could this be something to do with the floats or the needles sticking?

If you haven't done so already go though all the ignition side (plugs, points if fitted, cap, leads etc) and air filters and engine breather system, before you touch the carbs.

Thanks Harvey, I have checked the points, need to look at the plugs next and as I intend doing a service very soon I'll have a look at the air filter
