How much oil !!!!!

I doing repairs to my problems selecting gear on my manual 2000, I drained the oil out of the box. This is what came out.
The box never whined or gave any indication that the oil was nearly all gone. Why?
It has now been filled and is working ok again.
Will be keeping a close eye out for any leaks now.
