HOT INHIBITIONS? - Too Hot to Start?

How about this for a perplexing puzzle? - A four cylinder automatic that won't start when the engine is hot, but starts fine when the engine is cold! Can the inhibitor switch be affected by heat? Could it be the inhibitor relay? Could it be Martians? can you be bothered to reply if you have the solution? I hope so, because a new P6 owner has this very problem and it would be nice to show her that owning a P6 is a pleasure not a pain.
Regards, John.

I assume John you suggest the inhibitor because it simply doesn't attempt to start, rather than turning over and failing to start ?

Could also be starter related, maybe a connection that breaks when hot, or solenoid sticking once hot

Richard :)

Richard,
Thank you. These are some of the questions I have been asking of the owner. Further illuminating facts to follow, I'm sure.
Regards, John.

Richard,
Apparently, when hot, the engine does not attempt to turn over - Hence thought inhibitor, also possibly relay mounted on inner wing. Garage have since worked on this car but still has the same symptoms.
Any more ideas would be welcomed by the owner (a new club member) and me - Put me out of my misery!
Regards, John.

I had just the same problem on a 1990 Alfa 33 cloverleaf a copuple of years ago - ran it till warm, turn it off and it would not go again until it cooled down.

You wont like me for this - it was a random electrical fault which I never traced, and so I part ex'ed it, after a very long test drive...

I would get a test meter on wires in the ignition system, and if none show broken take it to an auto electical bloke...

Hope someone has a better idea!

Matt
