Historic Rally project car

Hi,

Thought I’d take a moment and introduce myself, only seems fair as I’m anticipating asking a lot of questions over the coming months :)

I’ve recently acquired a rather sad but relatively solid P6V8 Auto as a basis for building a Historic Rally car, not for the more high profile stage rally type stuff but the more Autotest/Reliability/Regularity centered events.

I’ve been in and out of club level motorsport for more than 20 years but this will be my first P6 so hence all the questions.

The P6 comes with a spare (completely rotten but running) SD1 Vitesse so I’m hopeful that this will provide useful parts for grading the P6.

You will soon see posts in the Gearbox section regarding converting to Manual from Auto, in the suspension section regarding how to improve handling on a budget, engine section on the sorts of things I should do while the engine is out etc…. Your help will be much appreciated :)

Enough for now,

Tim

Tim.... welcome to the forum and I hope you enjoy the assistance that the guys on here can and will offer. You must keep us updated as to your progress :)

Now that's the sort of project I approve of! Lots of help available on here, plus learn how to use the search function - you'll find a huge amount of what you're likely to want already up here.

Regards

Chris

Hi,

Thanks for the words of welcome.

For anyone interested the format of the events I’m hoping to compete in can be found @ http://circuitretro.net/default.aspx

The Circuit of Ireland retro would be classed as my home event and is one of 4 events that ad up to from the Irish Retro challenge; each event is a similar format but located in a different region on Ireland.

I competed between about 1984 and about 1998 in the Northern Ireland night navigation Championship using various Minis. Imps, Metros, a Dolomite Sprint or 2 and at the end a rather potent 205GTIs. Marriage, Kids, houses etc… eventually put paid to that part of my motorsport life. I changed direction to compete in Sprints and Hillclimbs (less time consuming) in more modern machinery but always hankered after the good old days. My long suffering Navigator has continued to compete in Navigation based events (on and off) since we gave up as a team so he’s kept his hand in.

For the moment I’m particularly interested in what bits I should strip off the SD1 before dumping it as its way passed restoration and I don’t have the space to just keep it sitting as a complete car on the drive. For reference, rules for the Irish based events are rather loose when it comes to originality (they're just glad to have you turn up!!) but we’d like to keep half an eye on doing events farther a field which tend to be tighter controlled.

I’ll post some pics (assuming I can work out how to do it!!) in the projects section after the weekend, gathering everything together in one place this weekend.

Bye for now,

Tim
