Hill Hold

well pae hill holds where it says D1 and then pulls off in second. I' think that despite having a d1d2 selector i actually have a 12d box...??

what are d1 and d2 actually meant to mean? full auto on mine is at d2...

Rich

As you say, you have a PRND2D1L selector plate, with a PRND21 gearbox.

Interestingly, mine hill holds in '2' and in '1'

Only discovered this while testing the handbrake. Setting off uphill in '2' is a bit of an effort though...

If it holds in "1" then it's either the brakes sticking, the idle speed too high, or the hill not steep enough, or a combination of any or all of them.

:) in order: not that, probably, possibly :)

had to boost the idle speed from lowest of the low as it would cut out under hard deceleration. So that's the most likely.

I thought all automatics kept stationary on hills because the normal forward creep overcame the tendency to roll back
Never realised there was more in it

on mine on a hill going between 2 and d in 2 it's effectively braked, whereas in drive the car tries to roll back.

All PRND21 boxes apart from Rover are like that, but the steeper the hill, the more throttle opening you need to maintain position, and that will soon overheat the box. The Rover system actually locks the box so it won't roll backwards, and you cant push or tow it backwards either, although I don't recommend you try the latter....

I think that the Humber that my father owned was PRND2L and of course it came with "Hill Hold", hence the reason I tried it on the Rover.

We had a Wolseley 6/99 with a Borg Warner DG box .
Wonder if Harvey is an expert on those ?
It had some strange pull out intermediate hold control

I have done very minor work on them, but don't know much about them at all, apart from the most important thing in my case, and that's to leave them alone.

You could hold on to second gear by engaging that speedhold.
