Hi, MY wife has just bought me a 1969 P6 V8 auto for my birthday! It's had one owner since new and has 58k on the the clock, unrestored with beautiful interior but the paint is rather flat (unlike me).

I am considering putting a towbar on as I have a small trailer and am considering getting a 2 berth caravan; not sure if this is the right place to ask but do I need an oil cooler or will she manage without?

Hi,
Welcome to the forum,.... where abouts in Reading are you :?:

Hello and welcome!

What a wonderful Birthday present. A transmission oil cooler in addition to the inbuilt unit within the radiator is always a good idea if you intend on doing any towing and/or you live in a hot climate. For maximum efficiency you run the new cooler in series with the inbuilt unit, the fluid travelling through the latter prior to entering your new cooler and returning to the transmission. There a various sizes available with the unit typically mounted in front of the radiator.

You can of course bypass the inbuilt unit if you wish, but be sure to scale your new cooler accordingly if you decide on this option.

I think he means an engine oil cooler!
As the auto's already have a gearbox oil cooler in the rad!!
Not really required, but worth considering if you intend to really use it everyday hauling a trailer for work or are possibly doing long continental towing touring!!
A good cut and polish could save the paintwork for a few years!
Some colours respond better than others!!
To take a lot of the hard work out of it,a local bodyshop sympathetic to classics could run a mop over it,and give it a good polish and wax to get you off to a good start for a reasonable price!!!
You must get in local contact with kev,"hermione",a very useful chap you couldnt do without right on your doorstep!!

I never even considered that!

When towing, the transmission will benefit far more than the engine by using an additional cooler, so I naturally went there. A lower temperature thermostat can be used to aid in keeping the engine running cooler, or an engine oil cooler can indeed be used if you wish.

The inbuilt transmission cooler is marginal at best, as the transmission fluid will be cooled to a temperature no less than the minimum coolant temperature within that section of the radiator. Heat is the major cause of reduced transmission life, so anything that can be employed to reduce that will be beneficial.

I don't think Reading is a hot climate ! Might be worth seeing if the Rover runs hot before deciding what if any extra coolers are needed
