Help please - My rattle

Since I have had my 2200TC there has been a rattle (sort of) from what appeared to be the top front end of the engine. Colin at Faringdon said he didn't think it was the top chain.
It appears to involve a rotation that gets louder as you initially rev the engine but I do not notice it on the open road. It is still there when you disconnect the the fan belt.
I have the rocker cover off now and I cannot see anything untoward. Could the noise be from the bottom chain and it is being carried up through the chain drive and out of the top of the engine? I do not have the facilities or experience to take it further and Colin also said it was a new one on him. The car drives well otherwise.

Further to the above, all at the top end has been confirmed by a friend as being o.k. We have hand cranked the engine and everything else is secure with no signs of any damage. Our suspicions are still with the timing chains.
When you take the plate off the side there is no plug on the end of the tensioner as you would expect. When checking from the top I can quite easily move the tensioner back a few mm but also it can come forward from the back plate even further. Does this suggest that the tensioner is well out of its seat and why is there no plug to remove at the back of it. I have had the copper filter out from the oil feed and cleaned it but no different. At 1,500 revs it goes, comes back in at 2,500 revs and goes again from about 3,500 revs.
Can you also help re the bottom tensioner. It it possible to check that there is one without dropping the sump. The chain guards are there and appear firmly fixed.

I had a similar rattle on a number of P6's and it has turned out to be on each occasion to be the steel sleeve that passes through the manifold heat insulator between carb and manifold. I glue it in with araldite. If I remember correctly you can check if is loose by removing the servo connection from the manifold an probing with a thin screwdriver.

Tony,

Many thanks for the suggestion

Jim at Red Hat also suggested this but Colin said it is a different sound from that. He believed as well that the TC didn't have that sleeve to rattle....but I will have a look

I would still like to know about the tensioner without a plug in the end for adjustment. Is it an after market product and what can I expect to find when I remove the front plate?

The tensioner with the plug is the original type, they are not adjustable, the plug allows the piston of the tensioner to be retracted for removal and installation. The later types without a plug had a plastic clip and after the tensioner is installed you pull the plastic clip out.

Tony,

Thanks for your help.
How do I know if the tensioner is doing its job properly and, as above, what should it look like when I take the round front cover off. Should it be well back into its seat or how far can it come out to keep the tension on the chain and still be OK?

Tony,

I have spoken with Weekley's and while they agree with the change they only sell new, the old type with the plug in. They are sending me one to have available when I remove the front plate. The idea is I will change it regardless and see how it sounds then.

The tenssioner on the p6 were ether good or soso.
remove the camcover and look down the chain you shoud see the tensioner slipper get a long strong screewdriver and position the end behind the slipper and ease the tensioner out you should feel a click.
the tensioners are self adjusting but also have a ratchet fitted so when you sart and no oil pressure it only retracts a tiny bit to the rachet stop and some tensioner just need a tweek to next step
also check the chain guides as they somtimes failed snaping the retaining bolt holes in two
