Help!!! Gearbox woes!

Hi,

I'm new to this forum business and was after some direction! I took my 1966 2000 sc for its mot today. Left it outside the garage, the mechanic came and got me and said I can't get it into gear, can you put it in the workshop. I thought he just wasn't used to driving an old car! When I tried to drive it the gear stick was floppy and I couldn't select any gear. I had a look under the car and that acorn thingy was on the floor. I quickly stripped the gear stick out and stuck the acorn on 'temporary' fix. Rebuilt it and tried to drive it. The thing is I can't select first gear. I managed to limp it on to the testers ramp and thankfully passed, I even managed to get it home albeit with a bit of clutch burn.

I don't know what the mechanic did to it (neither does he!) but now I'm stuck at home with a car that I can't get into first (other gears seam okay?). I'm going to change the gear stick with that acorn because it seems a concern but don't know if that's going to give me my first gear back???? Any advice would be gratefully received. I'm just so p****d off because it was fine on the way to the garage and it's been such a good car to me.

P.s the clutch slave doesn't look too leaky and I've only tried to get it into gear without the engine running.

Many thanks,

Rob

I'd try it with the engine running, sometimes things can just baulk when it's not. I'd also look underneath at the support rod between the gearlever mounting plate and the gearbox itself, as they can break, and the bushes fail, and while you're under there look at the position of the selector rods on the gearbox, they should all be in line in NEUTRAL, and also see if there is anything behind the centre one that could stop it moving backwards. I wouldn't do any more until the gearlever was replaced.

Okay. Thanks for the quick reply. I've tried to phone wadhams but he's on holiday for another week. Don't really know where else to try for a new one? I don't feel that positive about the stick fixing the problem but as it needs doin anyway I suppose it rules it out. Thanks again.
