Hello

Today i had a friend of mine look over the rover that used to work in a rover dealer when they were new and he`s worked on thousands of P6`s, he told me the car was amazingly good in places where it shouldn`t be given the age of it.He said it is definately worth saving , is good base for a restoration and has agreed to help me do it.

He can remember them being launched and is very knowledgeable on the early cars, he pointed a few things out to me like the fact that it still has its early type exhaust on it with a silencer right up front by the engine, he commented on the seat belts and said that they were not made by the company that the factory fitted belts were made and he seemed to think they were dealer fitted accesory belts so it may have not had belts from the factory.

Now that ive had a second opinion and the fact that the car has really won me over ive decided to hang on to it and have a go at restoring it finances/time permitting, in the meantime ive started making notes of things that i`l need for it and ive already posted a few wanted ads, if anyone has or knows to any parts that they think would help me please let me know especially parts that are specific to the early cars.

Paul.

Heres some pics from today, im sorry theyre not the best quality as my camera is getting on a bit.

That looks very good, not much more than surface rust. A bit of time spent now sorting that out and it will last for years. Great find !!

Indeed.

Hope to see that out on the show circuit soon 8) It will certainly raise a few eyebrows.

Well worth saving. :D :D

That is nice for it's age, should not take too much to get on the road? Shame the outer sill has been welded on, which is rather odd??? (or was that done on early ones)

Good find.

Good find.

The cover sill is a fairly recent addition by the looks of it possibly done before it was taken off the road, i dont know why they have welded it on as the sill its welded to is fairly solid and the original cover sill on the other side is attatched with screws as they were originally.

Good luck with your early P6, I had a Jan 64 up to last month.
When you come to doing it up, if the brakes need restoration, try and keep the Dunlop system if it is still on the car. If you get stck, I'm sure Paul will point you on the right direction to parts.
On the exhaust, you might find the early can system is still in place. If you need new cans and can afford S/S I can recommend Gough, they have the plans to make an exact replacement for 1963/4 models.
Has it still got its real wood on the inside of the doors?
Try to save it.

Thanks,

It still has the Dunlop system and i plan to keep it original, it also appears to have its original exhaust that doesn`t look too bad.It does have real wood door inserts.

What happened to your jan 64 ? My car has really given me the bug for the early cars, i want to find out as much as i can about the early ones ie details of production changes, surviving cars et`c.

Paul.

As to my 1963 Built P6 I sold it to a P6 member. I needed the room for my new hideous/loverable beast that was born out of wedlock in Japan in 1996 a (Mitsuoka Galue), but perhaps a regular writer on this group might like to give us his plans for my ex P6.

Please fellow members, before you are totally sick once you have typed "Mitsuoka Galue" into Google, mine is the Mark I of 1995/96, not the later series II or models built after 1997 that look like a Rolls Royce on heat.
From the back it has sort of Rover P5 or Alvis looks, But it does have solid metal bumpers that would not look to bad on a P6.

I had a bit of spare time today so i went to the heritage motor centre and checked out what information they held on my car in the archive reading room .

Unfortunately they dont have much info in the way of build specs/data only build dates, despatch dates, the dealer the cars were dispatched to and the body colour.

I found out that mine was "Label number 2009" built on the 16th of march 1964, despatched to Murkett bros of Kings lynn on the 20th of march and it was then registered on the 26th of march, so as someone pointed out in an earlier post it was built only a very short while before it actually hit the road.

Wow that is a result! She's probably telling the family "Remember dads old Rover, it's still going!"........

She only got rid it of it in november 2007, up until then it was in her garage at the same house where it had been since it was new (last driven in 1987)

Ive told her that i will stay in touch and hopefully show it to her when its back to its former glory. :D
