Hello, I thought i'd put a bit of input to the P6 Rover forum. I do actually own a Rover SD1 myself, but my father owns a 1972 P6 3500S that I used to own. I had it for about six years, until I sold it to my fathers very good friend. Unfortunatly, he passed away about five years ago, and his family donated the car to my father. He has had many problems with it, but mostly nothing uncommon with running a classic car.
When I owned it I had the very great wisdom :roll: to convert the desirable high compression(10.5:1) V8 engine, to a Range Rover EFi V8 :oops:
As a younger man, I didn't realize how stupid this idea was. But I now have to live with this mistake as i'm reminded every now and then with occasional injection problems, and of late, ignition problems. Although I have now sorted the ignition issues with the fitment of a breakerless system, and it is now a very pleasant car to drive. I sold the P6 as I prefered an automatic, so I decided to try out the Rover SD1 V8 with autobox. But in hindsight, the 3500S was the best of both worlds, with the choice of sporty type driving stirring gears, or lesuirely cruising in top using the great torque of the V8 to do the work.
When I owned it, it was corsica blue, but has since been resprayed in monza red. It also has the optional 14" rostyle wheels fitted, which my father prefers. I thought the spoked wheel trims where just as good though.

I was under the impression that the SD1 V8 was fitted with breakerless igniton as standard?

I do prefer carbs though, as I know how they work, and most of the idea of buying the P6 was to be able to work on it myself.

My daily driver is so complicated that you have to plug it into Jodrell bank to find out why it has a puncture! :shock:

Hello Quattro.
The engineer who did the swap decided to re-fit the P6 timing cover so as to enable clearance for standard water pump and fan from the radiator. Fitting the Range Rover timing cover meant a very tight fit to bonnet, radiator and no engine fan, although an electric fan would've solved that problem.

I think the overall appearance is more pleasing with the P6 timing cover fitted, and standard fan in place.
 
Hi and welcome, dont you regret the lack of your P6BS :? I know that many feel that the SD1 is a fine car :roll: I too once sold my P6B and it nawed at me for a long time in fact a couple of years so much so that I recontacted the person I had sold it to and asked wether he would consider parting with it to which he agreed :shock: oh well now he can suffer the regret, I for one was much happier after the transaction.
Its likely your fathers P6 will be around for many more years whereas the SD1 will probably fade into past history with few examples on the road except those owned by a devoted few (is it just me or do I seem to have a warped veiw of reality :mrgreen: ).

Of course, but as usual, I had to consider things at the time, funds, space, etc..
I have always wanted an SD1, but I also think the P6 a fine car. They both have their plus points IE:p6 for comfort, SD1 for roadholding etc..

Given the chance, I would have another P6, ideally a tobacco leaf 3500 auto, or scarab blue 3500 auto. But at the moment with four cars, and tight finances, and space, I can't even think about it. Although I really enjojed driving my fathers 3500S yesterday. umm..
