Hi,
In 3 weeks time I will pick up a 2200 SC sight unseen from our South Island. I'll let you know how it is then (hope it's OK) :)
I'm no stranger to classic cars, I have a Triumph 2500TC which I've had for 14 years along with a Spitfire.

Welcome to the forum Tony, hope all is well with the purchase, my very first car was a mk1 spitfire iv sadly never got to drive it legally on the road :(

Yes, this is the car that was on Trademe. Didn't really intend to buy it, but you know what happens... a wet afternoon browsing through Trademe,added a $10 bid over the current one and got left with it :oops: never mind, nothing left to do on my Triumphs so time for something new :) I'm in Wairoa, Hawke's Bay.

Good value for $ I recon when you look at other older cars on the market P6 s are great value good quality and just plain good fun!

Finally collected the $2010 NZ ((about 1000 British Pounds ) SC from Nelson on Tuesday. After a 3 hour trip on the Cook Strait ferry and a 6 hour drive from Wellington arrived home this afternoon after a 600 km trip. Unfortunalely wet weather most of the way so not many pics. Have posted a couple.
The car was more or less as stated body wise, I havn't found any rust and apart from a couple of electrical problems, brake warning light flickers a bit although reservior is full of fluid and a wire is off the alternator and a couple of easily fixed things.
Not too sure of the motor at this stage though. Sounds like big end rattles at any speeds over 60 kph in second gear and over 80 kph in top, so a reasonably slow trip home.
Having said that though, I was home from Wellington, 450 odd km's, in 6 hours, on our roads not a bad time.
Are these motors prone to bearing trouble ore is mine just tired.
Driving below 80 kph you wouldn't think anything was wrong.

We like those pictures! A little like a really nice day in Scotland - which is a high compliment. And the car looks good too.

If your noises off really are bearings it wouldn't be a huge surprise. The 4 cyl engine seems to want them done at around 60k miles. It's possible that the block was lightened a little too aggressively with the big holes in the side, covered by pressed steel sideplates, and is less rigid than ideal. But it is not a huge job and can be done with the engine in situ. Have a look at red-rovers recent thread.

There are other options for the engine noise though. If the alternator has had the adjuster bar replaced in steel, that will sing a bit - they should be nylon. Also the timing chains can make quite a racket when tired. But it could just be a chain tensioner leaking, which are hydraulic fed from the pressurised engine oil, and not doing its job. If not very carefully hung, exhausts can be pretty zingy too. A bit higher up, there are some curious bits of tin floating around between the carb and the inlet manifold which can break loose.

Next challenge for you is to get hold of a copy of the factory workshop manual and the factory spare parts manual (which shows how the car is assembled in very helpfull exploded diagrams). These are available new from the UK, usually to be found in some numbers on Ebay, or perhaps tap Al up to see if there are some more local sources.

Hi Tony, who was the previous owner? I used to live in Nelson in the 80's and 90's with my p6b (same one in my signature line) and that car looks very familiar to me.

Thanks folks, the car actually came from Rotorua about 12 months ago to Christchurch. After the earthquake owner moved to Motueka and had nowhere to keep her,...that's his story anyway !
I'm tempted to give her a oil change and put some 20/50 oil in and see if it improves the situation.it's overdue for a change and according to the sticker is running 15/40, If not I guess it's sump off and have a look.
Signs are the head has been off in the recent past,doesn't overheat or use water.
Something to do in the winter.

A 4 cylinder P6 really really wont like 15/40! I'm sure a good dose of 20/50 wil quieten things considerably!

Have a bit of a shop around. I managed to find Valvoline classic 20/50 at my local Supercheap. Repco and other more 'trade' related outlets looked at me blankly when I mentioned classic oils and zddp.
Factory workshop manuals do turn up on trade me from time to time and haynes manuals are quite common. It may be worth tapping your local Rover club on the shoulder too, they often have stocks of manuals and everyone wants the V8 stuff so you might get lucky.
 
I'm going to give the 20/50 a try, all I've got to lose is the cost of the oil !.Got some from Supercheap and have some ZPP.
Pretty sure it's the bottom end, ok when started from cold but gets noisy when she warms up.
Looks like the flexi plate was changed recently, the ring gear looks new. unfortunately I've got no written history, only what P/O was told and passed on to me.
Have picked up a new Hayne's manual for $10 on trademe.
