Hello from Edinburgh

I have very recently become the proud keeper of a 1966 2000 SC. In green. Nice solid car little rough around the edges and appears to be mostly original - but I'm sure there will be some bits not entirely as they first appear as I pick my way around the old girl. So far not done very much other than drive her home from Morpeth to Edinburgh which was a long run for the car going by the MOT history - a little under 900 miles since 2010 until then...

The list of jobs (and parts) has grown arms and legs already, but a quick summary is - rust treat underside of car before surface rust becomes holes; fit rear seat belts to keep the kids in the back when stopping quickly; decent service as the ignition parts and oil filter suggest this may be many years over due and a really good clean inside and out when the weather allows it!

Any advice on electronic ignition?

And has anyone looked at fitting a 3 point harness in the centre at the back instead of just a lap strap - I know it is designed and has the holes and captive nuts for the 2 outside ones - asthetics aside is it possible/safe?

Thanks - pictures will follow once Mr smart phone and mr PC decide to talk to each other again!

Welcome aboard. Looking forward to seeing the photos.

No idea regarding the centre rear seat belt as the P6 was only ever really designed as a 4-seater. Someone will doubtless have more idea than me though.

HI Alistair,

Welcome to the forum! Can't way to see some pics of the car. Arden is a beautiful colour!

Regarding rear seat belts, you can only get a lap belt in the centre by slipping each end over the same bolt that secures the latch-end of the other two belts. But as Johnny says, the was designed as a four-seater to take 4 adults. As such, there's no way anybody over the age of 10 could fit on the centre squab. There's also no legroom due to the trans tunnel.

Regarding electronic ignition, SimonBBC or Accuspark (same kit, different trade names) are available for £35 or so, and are genuinely fit and forget. I don't think there's anybody who wouldn't recommend one for price vs quality.

Welcome along Alistair. Another series 1 in Arden Green, nice, can't wait to see the pics.

You're not the only one in that area with a '66 car though.

....as if by magic...

Hi Alistair and welcome to the forum. Which part of Edinburgh are you in? I currently live in Innerleithen (25 miles south) but work just outside Penicuik and use my white '66 2000 daily. If you ever want to swap notes or compare our 2 cars let me know and I'm sure we can arrange something :D

Hello, and welcome to the forum, Alistair! Great to hear from another Scottish forum member! Sounds like a very nice car indeed, and Arden is very smart. I can't advise on the rear seatbelt in the centre, but as has been said, space is serious limited on the centre squab. Nothing wrong with a car that's a little rough around the edges, and mine is certainly in that camp! Regarding electronic ignition, another vote for accuspark from me.
Looking forward to seeing photos of the car, and hearing more about it.

Welcome to the forum, the answers to all your questions and p6 related problems are but a click away.

When I was a boy my dad fitted a child seat to his P6. It was a four point job and holes were drilled then bolts and spreader plates fitted so you could put a belt in but as the guys say it will be cosy.

I was using magnatronix before the ones mentioned came on the market and any of them will be fine.

Looking forward to seeing some pictures.

Colin

Thanks everyone. Dave I noticed that you are not far away and once the car is running right and the weather improves a run down the borders will be just the ticket. I'm near Portobello so nice an easy to get on to proper roads!

I had a chat with Mark Gray today about Electronic ignition. It will be the way to go eventually, but for now she's getting new points and condensor. The engine runs well enough, but could go better. It starts no problem and runs around at town speeds fine, but struggles a bit up the rev range. So I figured replace the parts that are due anyway and see how much things improve before hunting for other issues. Reckoning is with the ignition right, and a clear air filter a lack of power is fuel, compression or sticky valve issues. I'll check the compression when I do the plugs if I can find a compression tester somewhere, and remember how it works!

Seat belts are in for the 2 outside seats - could not get a colour match to the front ones so went for black for now - it looks possible to fit a 3rd 3 pointer with some work for the top mount, but it will be a tight fit to get 3 kids in the back and the belt won't sit right on the seat squab.

Pictures coming very soon....

Here are the first photos...Close up it is not so shiny as the photos suggest - but where it is not rusty will get left alone for now...
