Hello from Brentwood Essex

I'm Keith and live near Brentwood in Essex. My dad had a series 1 2000 SC and a series 2 3500 - which I was drove a few times and going to have but the rust bug was rather too much and it got sold in 1982. I had been looking for a 3500 for a while (since around 1982 maybe?!) but decided to cast the net wider and recently bought a 2200 TC so no doubt will be looking for advice on various topics as I get to know the car better. The car drives quite nicely on the motorway but one problem the car has becomes apparent in town - the throttle is reluctant to return and thus it idles fast until I put my foot under the pedal and lift it up! As the car hasn't had much use up until now I'll see if this frees up on its own before delving too deep.

However, I'm sure to need help at some point soif anyone could recommend a Rover P6 mechanic/ garage in my area that would be really appreciated.

I hope to be able to get to a few events in the car so look forward to meeting some of you during the summer.

Hi Keith - great to have you here. The 2.2TC is one of the rarest and perkiest P6s... Not far off a v8 auto speed wise with better economy.

Would be great to see some pics of your car

Welcome. You'll find this forum holds all the knowledge there is AND very friendly people to share it! Now for the pics ... :)

Hi, welcome to the forum, nice to have another Essex owner here :)

I'd just say lubricate all the throttle links and cable, maybe add an extra return spring too.

Hello Keith
Welcome to the forum and to P6 ownership. I'm pretty local and you'll occasionally see my Arden Green 2000TC parked up in London Road, though it's normally garaged elsewhere.

I've had good service from P G Wilkins workshop on the main London Road between Hutton and Billericay. They're not P6 specialists but have a good feel for all vehicles of our era.

Regards

John

Hi John, thats a useful tip - at the moment I can't start the darn thing! Will have to try over the weekend to work out why. I'll keep an eye out for your car too - you must be fairly nearby.
Best regards

Many of us on the forum swear by electronic ignition - well, it's better than swearing at a non-starting car.
I fitted a Simonbbc kit and it transformed things. 3 years on and it's still great. Cost about £30 then (still does) and very straightforward to fit!
Just Google Simonbbc.

Hi John - well the fault was found in the end - the car had no petrol and I must have made it home on the last few fumes - the guage is way out but the reserve tank got it going!

Adam - good suggestion however a new throttle cable (the old one was working but wasn't in good shape) and a bit of adjustment from a local mechanic has sorted the throttle sticking; a tune up got running a lot better than it was, not perfect but I'm going to live with it for a while before deciding what to do next!

Best regards
Keith

P.S. Well I thought I'd sorted it - but now refusing to start with at least 1/2 tank of petrol :( Seems to have a spark on all 4, some fuel is pumping, battery fully charged - I'm baffled.
P.P.S. Now starting - fuel issue!
Well so it seemed but one that kept coming back so further investigations......

A few pictures now the car is running at last (well not very well but I managed to drive it today without it stalling or otherwise breaking down)

Hi,
Nice looking car in a good colour!
I am also In Essex, Billericay, and I also have a 2.2TC, on an "M" plate in Mexico brown which I have owned for about 12 years, not always on the road though.
I re-built the front hubs and got it back on the road at the weekend. Got an enthusiasts day at work (ford) on thursday and it will be there beside a very tasty V8 belonging to a colleague.
Be happy to compare notes sometime, my brother also has a 2.2TC on a P.

Regards,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

Thanks for your comments - you must be quite nearby and it would be good to compare notes sometime. As per my last postings - it was running but now not again. I'm not sure if its still just a fuel issue (the car was off the road for years and it could have blocked up again) or something worse! I'm certainly hoping to get to some local events but at the moment I'm not very confident I'll get it on the road in any serious way anytime soon as I'm quite busy workwise again, I'd be very interested though to get any tips on tuning and engine related fault finding particular to the model.

Best regards
Keith

Sounds like your problems could be fuel related, I had my sender out last year to replace it, is fairly easy to do just be careful not to cover yourself in petrol as I did!
Also I added a paper filter element between the main pump on the side of the engine and the carbs. Sounds like your problems are dirt /pick-up/gauge related.
I have simon bbc electronic ignition fitted which id also recommend.
Mines off the road again for a couple of weeks while I decide what to do with a very poorly exhaust manifold and adjust the valve clearances which are out.

All the best,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

Thanks for your advice and tips. Certainly the fuel is one of the problems - although since I last posted I'm thinking the carbs still aren't right and it does look like the front carb still isn't working properly. I think this can be sorted with some SU replacement parts I've ordered but its just taking time :( The other issue is cylinder 1 is significantly lower compression than the other 3 but I'm tempted at this stage not to worry too much about it has it run OK (I assume in this condition). I have a SimonBBC distributor and coil kit ordered and ready to go in once the fog clears on the fuel/ carb related issues.

Best regards
Keith
