heated Rear Widow

Okay Chaps (& chapettes),

Went out in the car tonight and on the return journey the rear window fogged up. Turned on the demister/heater and nothing happened! Apart from a small area the size of a golf ball clearing. Is it common for the thin wiring in the glass to fail/burn out or will a check of all the connections/fuses cure this problem. The onset of winter and no means to clear the rear screen is upsetting to say the least.

If replacement is necessary how hard a job is it to do and source a new/decent rear window?

Year of car?

Some rear heated screens are easier than others to source...
...yes there is more than one type...

Replacement is quite easy - do you have a workshop manual?

Remove rear bit under window - one with filler cap through.
Might pay to take off boot lid as well.
turn nuts
screen drops and comes out!

Well thats the theory anyhow!

Its worth reading to the end of the section in the Haynes manual. It doenst mention having to saw through the fuel filler pipe to get the decker panel out until a fair way in.

Its not impossible to find yourself putting everything back together without any means of putting more petrol in and being a few miles from home...(shuffles feet in embaressed manner)...On a Sunday when Weekleys are shut and you wont get another until Tuesday at the earliest. And you left your regular car even further away. And the P6 is on the red bit of the petrol gauge.

Just saying it could happen...

Apart from that, as Pete says, its a doddle. Helps to grab the conecting wires as you disasemble so they dont vansish into the rear quarter panels. Mines a 72 K and was easy. Also a good opportunity to put some rust proofing in.

Worked that one out first, so no bother there!

Why do you have to saw through the fuel pipe?? I remember my saloon had a rubber connecting pipe with two jubilee clips. Would this have been done later? Possibly when a screen was replaced?

The fuel filler & panel would not come free from the rubber pipe - two of us tried to pry it free and, check the book, it says to cut it!

If you got yours off without let me know how, I've anouther that needs to come apart soon!

Matt
