Handbrake woe

Apart from a bit of Moggy-fettling, and due to a few other fairly major issues taking my time up, I've not been near my cars since the end of last Autumn.

And even though she was snug over-wintering in the garage, Occie's decided to throw a handbrake strop that leaves the lever pointing somewhat skyward. There was definitely a sign of this in the last day or two she was on the road.

Footbrake doesn't feel too bad, although I've not got much room to try it out properly with the Moggy blocking her in at the moment. So I'll be getting underneath in the next day or two I guess.

Any ideas on the cause anyone? Harvey?

I'd disconnect the linkage from the quadrants on both calipers, and then operate the quadrants individually to see which is causing the problem. The chances are it's just one, and as nice as it would be to say just ratchet it up, if it's happened once it will happen again, so the caliper's probably going to be coming off. The normal culprit is the teeth wearing off the ratchet.

Hmm....I was afraid the words "caliper" and "off" would be included somewhere in that answer! :(

Thanks Harvey...ramps out shortly then.

Cheers,

You never know, you might get under there and find that all the handbrake linkage has fallen apart.......

Have a feeling I'm not going to be that lucky with pigs flying...

With my head under the arch, the linkage looked intact in torchlight.

We'll see though....

Occie's rear end up in the air, but before I get the spanners out...a few pics.

Certainly looks as if the offside quadrant isn't moving fully when the brake's applied?

Only a tapped hole in the first one...might have something to do with it :D

Where am I looking on the linkage H?

Cheers Harvey...and there was me focusing on the offside quadrant. Could see the slipper had gone from the tapped hole but didn't spot the pad had gone as well!

Don't worry, I don't think anyone else noticed.....

Because that would probably been in and out of a dozen garages and they wouldn't have noticed, and I could spend an enjoyable half an hour under there, at the end of which it would be back to having a decent handbrake again. Even though there's not a vast amount of money in a job like that, the satisfaction is great, and in most cases it hooks a customer for life......

If I could spend the rest of my life doing one single thing, it would be fixing rear brakes on P6's.

Excellent...and I can just picture you smiling under there!

So...not having a stash of rear Girling caliper bits anywhere in my garage, I now find myself somewhat slipperless. Do you have any spares?

Is an ordinary 1/4" UNF setscrew/spring washer OK rather than the special screw/lock tab? I only ask 'cos that's what's on the other caliper... :)

Always. Never happier.

I'll look for a slipper, the shim that goes with it, and the bolt. A spring washer is probably as effective as the standard lockwasher. I'll let you know what I find tomorrow.

If ever (whenever ?) i need the rear brakes doing i'd happily drive down to essex to make your day Harvey :)

I can't find the slipper. I have some here somewhere, but by the time I find them you'd be better putting a "Wanted" ad here. Someone will have all you need. I have the shim to hand, but that's it, and that's no good on its own.
