Got one at last

Hello Everyone,

Picked up my P6 today and travelled home 98 miles without a hitch. She's a 2000sc in lunar grey i think, it looks a weak green thou? I have most of her service history including the original purchase receipt. Bodywise she seems excellent and looks solid in all the troublesome places. She seems a bit low at the back so thats were i will start first i think.

She is also a bit of a devil to get the right gear, gearstick feels a bit floppy. Other than that i am very pleased and cant wait to get started. I have attached some pictures and will post some better ones once ive given her a polish. ( Pictures might be a bit big, sorry first time ive done this):D

Cheers, will know a bit more tomorrow when i can get her up on some ramps. will also take the sill covers off and see what lies beneath :(

Hi Simon,,

Looks very nice!
The rear springs/dampers could be tired, gearlever has a bush at its base that is known for failing giving floppy lever and hard to engage gear,"easy to fix".
A good cure for the springs is some coil inserts, the type used for towing,"not too bad a job",they firm up the back end great, ive got them on the V8 and its improved the handling without towing.
Or you could put some uprated std height springs in.
Dont be affraid to give it a good poke and a firm tap with a light hammer to check for rust or weak spots!!
Check the bulkhead suspension mounting points as well, open the boot, pull the tank and inner wheel arch covers off and have a good look there!!

Dave

Saw that one on car and classic, wow what a beauty you have. I'd love a lunar grey car myself but I can't seem to find any that I can afford. Well at least the car I have coming has a lunar grey bonnet - I may keep it like that :)

Cheers, Adam.

Hi Dave,

Thanks very much, i will have a look at the bulkhead and check the mounting points.

Coil inserts sounds a good idea Thanks, i will have a look at the prices. What part would i need to cure the floppy gear leaver, just a bush? Thats something i would like to cure asap :) Glad you like the car

Cheers Adam, Yes I was at my financial limit with this one, I had looked at a few around the £500 to £1000 Mark and they were mostly rotten. This one looks sound body wise and runs well, the only problem is I don't have any of my funds left to put some of the problems right. Never mind, I've got one now, I will just have to start saving again :)

Have you found a car then ?

This is the sort of thing you need for the inserts.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COIL-SPRING-ASSIS ... 19c20e481e
You will need to remove the damper and the spring to fit them, but thats quite easy if you have good basic tools and a good jack and axle stands,do them a side at a time.
Has the added bonus of lifting the rear end by 2" as well!!
The gearlever bush can be obtained via Mark Gray at the Rover P6 Club and is a doddle to fit.

Use it as bit before you start pulling it apart
That way you'll have pleasant memories of driving it to spur you on if you do find any major problems

I think I'll get a set of those spring inserts

Long story but: Yes, some time ago Nick Dunning posted on the forum about a car he had obtained, that he was going to respray - a 1972 2000 auto. I think the post was titled "Colour change?" A few months after (also after a few other comments) he said that not much had been going on with the car, as customer cars had been getting the attention. All this was started around June/July 2009 - That very car is still in the same state, and due to financial circumstances and busy business, the project to restore this car, cannot go ahead. I'm friends with his son, and have also bought a car from him in the past (of course a p6), and he's given me a quote to weld up another p6 that I owned last year. (Note owned - the quote was a budget breaker and he advised that I got rid of said car and that I got one that doesn't need welding). So last year when I last saw him he showed me this project car (everything on it is like new - it's just missing seats bumpers, and a few other things - that he has in stock and I can buy separately at a later date), and he explained how it was hanging around/getting in the way for too long and it was probably going to get broken for spares, and that if I wanted it, I was to tell him.

So it's coming next week. Nick even said he'd rather I have fun and get the car on the road, than it getting broken and a sound baseunit going to waste. - The panels are odd colours but they are like new.

You can also find cars by looking on ebay - not just the cars for sale sections, on here (as I write this I know of 2 on here), club for sale sections, by word of mouth, and I didn't know it but just by having a long walk and taking long-cuts to my friends houses I know of 5 (soon to 6) Rover P6's in my local area.

Cheers, Adam.

Well good luck with yours when you get it, post some pictures of her when you can. Sounds like a nice one, just need to pick a nice colour, will you stick with original rover colours of opt for a different one ?

She looks lovely. Certainly Lunar Grey.

The gearchange issue will be the bushes in the linkage having worn out causing everything to flop about. This is a job we've done on four different 2000's in the last year.

I'm delighted Adam's having the car. We have been so busy with customer's cars that there was little chance we'd be able to sort it. It's going to a good home. On the return run Adam's 1977 TC is coming down for MOT work, Adam's going to do a bit of (supervised) welding to get her ready.

Cheers Dave I think you might be right, my dad keeps saying that to :)

Cheers Nick

I am really pleased with her, I hope Adams drop and pick up goes well. Welding seems a must skill to learn, hope I don't have to do to much of that yet, maybe I won't take to many panels off yet

Well my first task will be to get the car on the road so at that stage it will be multicoloured until I have the funds to sort it out. However when I look at the car, what is painted tobacco leaf looks good, it is practically new paint, but where the car was immediately stored afterwards, that quality job has been ruined by deep (but not through) storage marks/scratches. So I am persuaded to go tobacco again, because when the paint job is new, apparently it is full of colour - depending on the light, you can see some hints of green and yellow, which is a nice touch.

Glad you are pleased with your purchase, lunar grey is one of my favourite colours. Most of the time it looks light green, but every now and again, depending on the light and how you look at the car, it actually looks gray. Or at least I have found that with my own experiences (I'm not colour blind, honest)!

Welding is a must for older cars - last year I owned a cameron green 2000 auto. It looked rough, but the base unit looked super in a few areas, and ok in others. However when Nick and Duncan looked, they actually felt the sills, and the metal was so squidgy it could have been used as a cake tin - note to self: feel as well as look. Also my mother was asking why I like big cars like P6's rather than smaller ones like morris minors - I then spoke about this to my friend's dad who said I ought to have a degree in welding if I was thinking about a morris minor.

On the note of rusty cars, a friend of mine owns a car called Dogtanien - a 1976 2200sc manual in richelieu red. It is a heavily crashed/welded/neglected car that has done about 105000 miles. It was last crashed, I mean on the road, in 2004 - being stored outside in the elements for 6 years, the beautiful red paint has faided to a matt pink colour along with a few voids where there used to be a substance called steel... At the moment they are waiting for their trusty welder to give a verdict - can it be fixed without needing a straight jacket afterwards - at this stage the answer is more likely to be that the car is going to be used for parts - which is a shame for a car with such a good name.

I say enough of my essay - I really could go on forever.

Cheers, Adam.
